Forced displacement of Palestinians war crime, violates international law - EU ambassador

EU pledges support to Jordan amid regional challenges

By - Feb 13,2025 - Last updated at Feb 13,2025

EU Ambassador to Jordan Pierre-Christophe Chatzisavas

AMMAN — EU Ambassador to Jordan Pierre-Christophe Chatzisavas on Thursday stressed the EU’s stance that any forced displacement of Palestinians from the occupied Palestinian territories is a war crime and a clear violation of international law.

In an interview with the Jordan News Agency, Petra, Chatzisavas emphasised that Gaza remains an integral part of Palestinian territories and must be part of the future independent Palestinian state.

He also reaffirmed that the two-state solution is the only viable path to long-term regional security and stability, underscoring the EU’s steadfast commitment to this stance.

The ambassador also commended Jordan as a key ally and one of the EU’s closest partners in the region, highlighting the deep-rooted bilateral relations built on mutual respect and shared benefits over several decades.

He also emphasised the significance of the EU-Jordan partnership agreement, which has been in place for more than 20 years and remains one of the EU’s most advanced partnerships, noting that the agreement includes a free trade deal and is periodically updated every four to five years.

He also said "Following extensive discussions over the past six months to redefine priorities, the two sides formalised their new strategic partnership agreement on January 29 under the patronage of His Majesty King Abdullah. This agreement is structured around five core pillars: politics, security, investment, human development, and migration."

In terms of economic relations, Chatzisavas underscored the EU-Jordan trade agreement’s advantages, particularly the facilitation of Jordanian exports to European markets free from quotas and tariffs. Ongoing efforts to update the simplified rules of origin framework will further enhance Jordan’s exports. With a market of 450 million consumers, the EU sees a growing need to diversify Jordan’s export base.

Investment is another key priority, with the new strategic partnership agreement featuring a 3 billion euro support package, including a 1 billion euro concessional loan aimed to ease Jordan’s macroeconomic challenges and facilitate structural and fiscal reforms.

"An additional 600 million euros in grants, including direct budgetary support, will help Jordan manage external pressures and continue its modernisation efforts."

Chatzisavas also highlighted the EU’s ability to leverage up to 1.4 billion euros in investments in Jordan through partnerships with institutions such as the European Investment Bank, citing the Water Carrier Project as an example, where EU grants facilitate access to concessional loans for large-scale infrastructure projects.

Chatzisavas also reiterated that EU development aid to Jordan is aimed at poverty alleviation and improving access to essential services, including education and healthcare. He highlighted EU support for programmes addressing social challenges such as employment, gender-based violence and the refugee crisis. He also emphasised the EU’s ongoing commitment to supporting the Syrian Refugee response and UNRWA.

On humanitarian assistance, he pointed to the EU’s 130 million euro pledge for Gaza aid at the start of 2024, supporting evacuation efforts for hundreds of children now receiving treatment in EU countries.

He also commended Jordan’s initiative, led by King Abdullah, to provide medical treatment for 2,000 children from Gaza.

On the political front, Chatzisavas said that the EU is committed to increasing political dialogue, with plans to hold a summit every two years and regular invitations for Jordan’s foreign minister to address the EU Foreign Affairs Council.

Regarding security cooperation, the ambassador highlighted the EU’s desire to boost cooperation in areas such as counter-narcotics, international crime, counterterrorism, and the rule of law, highlighting growing military cooperation between the EU and the Kingdom.

AMMAN — The Jordan Hashemite Charity Organisation (JHCO) said on Thursday that since the ceasefire was declared, Jordan has sent more than 62,000 tents to Gaza, following the delivery of the 161st relief convoy.

The JHCO noted that over 12,000 tents had been delivered prior to the truce, bringing the total number of tents sent to Gaza to over 74,000, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

These efforts are part of Jordan’s continuous relief operations, which are carried out under the directives of His Majesty King Abdullah, the JHCO added.

JHCO Secretary-General Hussein Shibli highlighted that initial assessments had anticipated a need for only 30,000 tents, but updated figures revealed that over 500,000 displaced individuals urgently required shelter.

Shibli emphasised that Jordan was one of the first countries to offer comprehensive support to Gaza, providing food, medical supplies, and relief goods despite numerous logistical challenges.

He also reaffirmed Jordan's commitment to assisting its Palestinian brothers and sisters during these dire humanitarian conditions.

He added that the aid is being delivered via a land bridge in coordination with the Jordan Armed Forces–Arab Army (JAF) to ensure direct distribution to displaced individuals who have lost their homes.

He affirmed that Jordan’s support for Gaza has never stopped and will continue, especially as the humanitarian crisis worsens.

Shibli reiterated that under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah, Jordan will remain steadfast in supporting the people of Gaza with all available resources.

He stressed that relief convoys will not stop until aid reaches every person in need, in line with Jordan’s deep-rooted humanitarian and fraternal commitment.

Cassation Court upholder over 3-year sentence for drug dealer

By - Feb 12,2025 - Last updated at Feb 12,2025

AMMAN — The Court of Cassation has upheld a May 2023 State Security Court (SSC) ruling, sentencing a drug dealer to over three years in prison after convicting him of possessing illegal narcotics in Amman in November 2021.

The court declared the defendant guilty of obtaining illegal narcotics with the intent of selling the drugs to an undercover agent on November 28.

The SSC handed the defendant five years in prison for the offence of possessing illegal narcotics and ordered him to pay JD5,000 in fines.

However, the court decided to reduce the fine to JD3,500 and the prison term to three years and four months in prison to give the defendant a second chance in life.

Court documents said the Anti-Narcotics Department (AND) learnt the defendant was selling Captagon pills in the local market for JD1 and sent one of its agents to pose as a buyer.

“The AND agent got in touch with the defendant and asked him for 200 Captagon pills in return for JD220,” court documents said.

When the two met, AND agents immediately arrested the suspect, court papers added.

The defendant contested the SSC’s ruling through his lawyer, who argued that the court “did not provide solid evidence to implicate his client”.

Meanwhile, the SSC prosecution office asked the higher court to uphold the sentence and the fine imposed on the defendant.

The higher court maintained that the SSC had followed the proper procedures in issuing the sentence against the defendant.

“It was clear to the court that the defendant confessed willingly to possessing the illegal drugs to sell in the local market,” the higher court said.

The Court of Cassation judges were Mohammad Ibrahim, Yassin Abdullat, Nayef Samarat, Qassem Dughmi and Hammad Ghzawi.
