AMMAN — Lawmakers on Wednesday reiterated their unwavering support for His Majesty King Abdullah in every decision he makes to defend the nation and uphold its interests, particularly in relation to the Palestinian cause.

During a session chaired by Lower House Speaker Ahmad Safadi, in the presence of Prime Minister Jafar Hassan, MPs commended the King's remarks [during , describing them as both political and rational, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

His Majesty's message unequivocally affirmed Jordan's stance against any form of displacement, deputies noted, highlighting that the Kingdom's historical and consistent positions on Palestine are not open to compromise, and stressing Jordan's support for the Palestinian people's just struggle.

The session, which was initially a legislative one, shifted to a special session to focus on the King’s meeting with US President Donald Trump the previous day, with 110 MPs participating.

The MPs stated that any solution to the Palestinian issue must align with a unified Arab stance, emphasising their rejection of any attempts to displace Palestinians or resolve the issue at Jordan's expense.

They stressed that His Majesty would never compromise on Jordan’s sovereignty and the rights of Arabs, condemning efforts to displace the Palestinians as a blatant violation of Arab and Palestinian rights.

'Bronze Age trade links Levant, Egypt, Mesopotamia, southern Europe'

AMMAN — The Bronze Age was a period of intensive contacts in the Levant, Egypt, Mesopotamia and southern Europe. It rapidly developed interconnectedness between different parts of the region and Syria was one of the commercial hubs connecting Mesopotamia, Anatolia, Egypt and Palestine.

Some Early Bronze red burnished jugs found in northern Palestine present morphological features vaguely reminiscent of contemporary vessels from the Urukian colonies in northern Syria, noted French Professor Emeritus Pierre de Miroschedji from the National Centre for Scientific Research.

Miroschedji added that a more significant group of EB IB vessels found in graves at Tarsus suggests the possibility of occasional contacts, probably maritime trade between Syria and Anatolia.

"On the other hand, the relations with Egypt were intensive and widespread and they illustrate a completely diff rent situation since they took place in the framework of an Egyptian colonial enterprise affecting mainly the southwestern part of Palestine," the professor said.

"The interaction between the two countries was a dynamic process. Following an initial phase of sporadic exchanges in the Late Chalcolithic, the relations developed during the EB I at the rhythm of the emergence of the Egyptian state," Miroschedji elaborated.

Faynan in Wadi Araba was another centre of the copper production besides Cyprus, and the expansion of horticulture, the domestication of the donkey as a beast of burden, and the progress in navigation techniques created the fruitful conditions for the establishment of regular exchange relations.

The EB IA saw the first evidence of Egyptian presence along the north coast of Sinai and in a small area at the south of the coastal plain in search of copper and other local products.

The EB IB witnessed a considerable development of the Egyptian presence in many settlements of south-western Palestine which became a de facto Egyptian colonial territory, consequently, from where local products, mainly oil and wine, were exported to Egypt.

"This interaction culminated during the Final EB IB, contemporary in Egypt with Dynasty 0 and the beginning of the First Dynasty. The Egyptian colonial domain was then administered by Egyptian officials probably residing in the Egyptian fortified settlement of Tell es-Sakan and in entrepôts like En Besor and trading outposts like Tel Erani," the professor said.

The Kfar Monash hoard of copper tools and weapons is another testimony of the Egyptian presence in the coastal plain," Miroschedji underlined.

Burials were often the major source of information on the EB I and several scores of tombs, isolated or grouped in cemeteries near settlements, have been excavated. In the Mediterranean zone, they consist of artificial caves accessed through a lateral shaft, Miroschedji said.

He added that each tomb was used for collective burials during a long span of time, presumably by an extended family or clan, so that hundreds of skeletons were sometimes accumulated in disorder.

"In most cases, especially at Jericho at the end of the period, it seems that primary burials were practised. In the semi-arid peripheries, secondary burials in tombs built above ground prevailed. They belong to several distinct traditions," Miroschedji said.

Dolmenic burials exist in the Golan and its western periphery, on the Jordanian Plateau, and in the Jordan Valley while in some areas of the Negev and in southern Sinai are found built tombs in the shape of a circular (Sinai) or a square room; these nawamis and their variants are part of a funerary tradition typical of the southern deserts that can be traced to Oman through the Arabian Peninsula from the EB I onward, Miroschedji underlined.

"Indirect evidence attesting to the importance of funerary rituals is provided by the appearance during the EB I of cultic vessels, sometimes found in tombs. The same vessels might have been used in public rituals. There is evidence of temples within a settlement at Hartuv, and especially at Megiddo."

Presumably these temples were dedicated to a fertility goddess, as in the Chalcolithic and the EB II–III periods," the professor concluded.

AMMAN — The Jordan Maritime Commission (JMC) signed 16 authorisation agreements in 2024, enabling the issuance of international classification certificates that comply with the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) standards for ship safety at sea.

JMC Director-General Omar Dabbas on Wednesday said that all maritime sector regulations in 2024 were thoroughly reviewed and updated, leading to the creation and approval of several new legislative frameworks, including updated bylaws and instructions, which were enacted following their publication in the Official Gazette.

As part of its ongoing digital transformation strategy, the JMC has rolled out seven pilot e-services currently in the trial phase, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Plans are also underway to automate an additional 24 services, aiming to streamline maritime operations and enhance overall service efficiency, Dabbas said.

A key operational improvement this year has been the reduction in processing time for ship entry permits at Jordanian ports, Dabbas noted, adding that the time has decreased from around one hour to just 10 minutes, provided that all required documents are complete and in compliance.

The director-general also said that the Ministry of Transport and the UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure have signed an initial memorandum of understanding to renew their agreement on mutual recognition of maritime certificates for seafarers in both countries, with the MoU pending the completion of necessary diplomatic procedures.

In the area of maritime health certification, the JMC issued 181 health certificates for vessels docking at Aqaba’s ports in 2024 and granted 416 boat driving licenses for operations within and beyond Jordanian territorial waters.

The JMC said that it also provides a wide range of maritime services, including technical inspections, vessel maintenance and repairs, marine component cleaning, fuel supply, potable water, food provisions, spare parts and various environmental services.

AMMAN — After months of drought, February’s long-awaited rain is providing a "much-needed" boost to Jordan’s agricultural sector, with female farmers and industry experts reporting early signs of recovery.

Across the country, women working on the land are expressing renewed hope for a "bountiful harvest" this season, as the rain visibly improves their fields.

“This rain is a blessing,” said Naifa Nawasrah, a farmer from Ghour Al Safi. “After so many dry spells, every drop counts. The moisture is reviving the soil and lifting our spirits.”

Nawasrah, who has been managing her family farm for over a decade, observed that the rain has led to noticeable improvements in crop health, with the first green shoots of new growth emerging in fields that had nearly withered.

Aisha Qaisi, a small-scale farmer in Madaba, echoed similar sentiments. “We were on the brink of despair after the previous droughts, but these fresh rains have given our land new life,” she said.

Qaisi also said that the improved conditions have motivated her to invest more in sustainable farming practices.

“Jordan’s agricultural industry has been under immense stress,” President of the Jordan Valley Farmers Union and an agricultural expert Adnan Khadam said.

“With the challenges posed by climate change and water scarcity, this much-needed rain offers a glimmer of hope,” Khadam highlighted.
