Resumption of Jordan Gate towers construction lifts hopes for local economy

AMMAN — The Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) on Tuesday announced the relaunch of construction for the Jordan Gate twin towers located near the Sixth Circle.

It is a viable location in the Kingdom with economists predicting a boost in the local economy due to the resumption of the construction. 

“GAM has acquired 31 per cent of shares of the company that owns the project,” Amman Mayor Yousef Shawarbeh said in a statement sent to The Jordan Times.

The project is a “jumpstart” for the boosting of the local economy and attracting footfall and foreign investment, economist Khaled Salameh told The Jordan Times. 

Salameh stated that the project is estimated to increase economic activity by millions during the construction phase, as well as create thousands of short-term job opportunities for construction workers.

“We are hoping that the project management will hire local contractors and businesses to implement the project,” Salameh stated.

Salameh added that the construction industry has potential to absorb high unemployment rates and open up new venues for job seekers in different trades. 

Shawarbeh noted that GAM became a main partner in project. The decision comes within the framework of the government’s commitment to strengthen the national economy and work to make existing investments succeed, bolstering faltering ones, he said in the statement.

Shawarbeh added that the first phase of the project, which includes the residential North Tower and the commercial complex, would be completed within 18 months.

“We have been living near a construction site for over 13 years,” Ola Salos, who lives right next to the project, said. 

Salos noted that she was “thrilled” upon hearing the news, noting that it is not the first time the project has been relaunched.
