Jordanian Senator Alia Bouran elected first woman to lead PAM

AMMAN — The Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM) on Saturday in Belgrade, Serbia, elected Senator Alia Bouran as its president. Bouran is the first female president of the organisation, which includes 27 countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea.

Established in 2006 as a regional parliamentary institution, PAM aims to improve cooperation among Mediterranean countries and help solve regional conflicts and disputes, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra. PAM includes three major committees focused on politics and security, economy and human rights.

It also has a number of subcommittees specialised in energy, the Middle East, terrorism, the environment, climate change, tourism, water, immigration and domestic violence. Bouran has previously served as president of the 1st standing committee and vice president of the assembly, Petra added.
