AMMAN — Criminal Investigation Department (CID) personnel have arrested 117 suspects during a crackdown against protection rackets, a statement from the Public Security Department said on Wednesday.

The campaign, which started earlier this week, is implemented by CID cadres in Amman and the northern region targeting suspects at markets and at their houses.

Twenty-seven of the detained 117 suspects are wanted for criminal cases, while the rest are suspected of being involved in protection racket schemes against people and shop owners. The CID said that the campaigns will continue and intensify in order to arrest any individuals involved in similar schemes.

The department called on residents and shop owners not to comply with those racketeers but to report them immediately to the police.
