Vonn bombs out of world championships super-G won by Austrian Venier

By - Feb 06,2025 - Last updated at Feb 06,2025

SAALBACH, Austria — Returning US star Lindsey Vonn fell short in her bid for a ninth world medal at her ninth world championships after bombing out of Thursday's super-G in Saalbach won by Austria's Stephanie Venier.

In the absence of Mikaela Shiffrin, who won silver and bronze in the last two world championships but is making her own comeback from injury, Vonn was wearing bib number 30 for the descent of the 2.1km-long Uli Maier course in brilliant sunshine.

But shortly after the first intermediary high up the course, the 40-year-old — making a comeback from retirement following a successful knee operation that left her pain-free for what she said was the first time in years — clattered into a gate.

She was left nursing her right arm, which made contact with the gate pole, before skiing down unaided. She was afforded a rousing welcome in the finish area which she duly acknowledged with a wave with her right arm.

"I just went a little too early into the gate and I hooked my arm, I guess in between my arm guard and my glove," said Vonn.

Venier clocked a winning time of 1min 20.47sec, finishing 0.10sec ahead of Italian veteran Federica Brignone.

There was a tie for bronze between Norway's Kajsa Vickhoff Lie and rising American racer Lauren Macuga, both 0.24sec off Venier's pace.

It had looked like Brignone's run might have been the defining descent, but Venier was having none of it, punching her fists into the air as she raced through into the finish area in first place.

The wait for Vonn then ensued, although not even the most optimistic pundit would have given her a realistic chance of a medal.

"I tried a different boot today, so I think my timing was a little bit off," said the American, who had posted a photo of her on a nebuliser on Wednesday as she battled a cold.

"I took a gamble that didn't pay off, but I'll do the training run tomorrow. Again, try a different material and hopefully it'll be better and I'll be in a good position for Saturday" for the downhill.

Austrian glory

Venier's victory crowned a stunning start for the host nation.

A crowd of 15,000 was packed in around the finish area. Predominantly Austrian flags waved, cowbells rang and airhorns were blown as remixed, bass-heavy disco classics boomed out, intermingled with race commentary.

With only the final 10 gates visible to the fans packed into the temporary stands, the action higher up the Zwolferkogel Mountain was relayed on two giant screens.

There were gasps as the racers hit speeds of 120km/h and negotiated jumps of 33 metres. As Venier's intermediate times flashed up green, to signify she was fastest, the partisan crowd erupted in joy.

"It still sounds unreal," said the newly-crowned world champion. "I was extremely nervous before the start and didn't know how to deal with it. But apparently that was a good omen!"

Christian Scherer, CEO of the Austrian ski federation, added: "It's a joy and we are really privileged to experience that and we are so happy, especially for the team, for the coaches and for Steffi, because it's most important that the athlete can perform at their best on D-Day -- and she did a great run."

There were also groans as Ricarda Haaser, the first Austrian out of the start hut, came a cropper. She managed to get to her feet by herself and gingerly side-slid off the course with her concerned father looking on from the finishing area.

It was later confirmed that Haaser had ruptured the cruciate ligament and internal meniscus of her right knee.

Italy's Sofia Goggia came in fifth, at 0.30sec, ahead of Germany's Emma Aicher and 2018 Olympic champion Ester Ledecka of the Czech Republic, the latter making a mistake in the final third that undoubtedly cost her a podium place.

Switzerland's big hope came in the shape of Lara Gut-Behrami, the reigning Olympic champion who also won world gold in 2021 as well as silver in 2013 and bronze in 2017.

But she followed up on her sixth place in the super-G at the last worlds with eighth, at 0.70sec.

Bove's future uncertain after heart attack horror as Fiorentina finish Inter clash

By - Feb 05,2025 - Last updated at Feb 05,2025

MILAN, Italy — Edoardo Bove and Fiorentina will relive Italian football's most harrowing episode of recent years on Thursday when the Viola complete their home match with Inter Milan, which was interrupted in December when the midfielder suffered a heart attack on the pitch.

The 22-year-old will be watching from the bench as Inter try to join Napoli at the top of the table in the remaining 74 minutes of a fixture stopped by his collapse in front of distraught players and fans, who watched in horror as medics dashed onto the Stadio Artemio Franchi pitch and rushed him to Florence's Careggi hospital.

That quick response saved Bove's life but his future in football is still uncertain as he awaits the results of a raft of tests carried out during his two-week stay in intensive care.

Bove left hospital with defibrillator which could be removed if deemed safe to do so, but if the test results show he has to have one permanently installed his career in Italy will almost certainly be over due to the stringent health regulations which govern sport in the Mediterranean nation.

Since 1982 it has been mandatory by law for anyone who practises competitive or non-competitive sport of any level -- from gym membership right up to Serie A football -- to be in possession of a certificate which deems that individual healthy enough to participate.

For professional athletes, the criteria for the certificates is established by each sport's governing body and goes beyond what is required by law.

Footballers have to undergo a battery of heart exams including an ultrasound, a form of medical imaging, a three-minute step test which is either monitored or preceded and followed by an ECG, and blood tests.

A source who works on the medical staff at a Serie A club told AFP that there is "little to zero chance" that a footballer with a heart condition which required the installation of a defibrillator, essential to ensure a regular heartbeat, would be given permission to play in Italy.

That's because contact sport would be considered dangerous for the athlete in question as the defibrillator could be damaged, for instance, in a tackle or while challenging for a header.

The source told AFP that the mandatory tests for professional and semi-professional athletes can't detect every single heart problem because more complicated tests would increase costs, not just for the top Serie A clubs but for teams in lower down the football pyramid where finances are much tighter.

'Black hole'

AFP was told that there is "open debate" among Italian football's wealthier top clubs about making their medical testing more stringent than even those demanded by Italian law and the football federation (FIGC).

However Walter Della Frera, head doctor at Italian footballers' association (AIC) says "there is always a black hole of unpredictability" with testing.

"We can't, even with all these tests, find absolutely everything," he says.

"There are so many situations that can cause a cardiac issue that cannot be predicted. There are other situations in which there could be a heart problem that can't be found neither with an ECG nor during stress tests.

"We cannot do an MRI on everyone to see if there are small scars that can trigger arrhythmia. That would be impossible, economically and in practice."

In the meantime Bove has been given special permission by the FIGC to watch matches from the dugout, where he will be on Thursday, and although he is banned from team training, a source at Fiorentina told AFP that he is otherwise part of the squad, eating with his teammates and on occasion refereeing training matches.

Bove's situation is further complicated by the fact that he is on loan from his boyhood club Roma until the end of June, with Fiorentina having an option to make his transfer permanent but unable to do so before finding out whether he will have to try his hand at playing abroad.

That was what Christian Eriksen did when he was released by Inter Milan in 2021 after his own brush with death during that year's European Championship, playing first with Brentford and then Manchester United in the Premier League.

But while Eriksen is a recognised star and Denmark's most-capped player, Bove is yet to make 100 league appearances and has never even played senior international football, limiting his options should an anxious wait end with his and Fiorentina's worst fears confirmed.

Tiger Woods announces death of mother, ‘my biggest fan’

By - Feb 04,2025 - Last updated at Feb 04,2025

LOS ANGELES, United States — Tiger Woods announced on Tuesday that his mother Kutilda had passed away, paying tribute to his parent as “my biggest fan”.

“It is with heartfelt sadness that I want to share that my dear mother, Kultida Woods, passed away early this morning,” the 15-time major champion wrote on Instagram.

“My Mom was a force of nature all her own, her spirit was simply undeniable. She was quick with the needle and a laugh. She was my biggest fan, greatest supporter, without her none of my personal achievements would have been possible.

She was loved by so many, but especially by her two grandchildren, Sam and Charlie.

Thank you all for your support, prayers and privacy at this difficult time for me and my family.

Love you Mom.” Thai national Kutilda met Woods’ father Earl when he was serving in the US military in Bangkok in the late 1960s.

An ever-present on the golf course during her son’s greatest triumphs, Woods has often spoken affectionately of how his mother’s support helped shape his career, noting in an interview how he was more fearful of her than his father.

Mbappe out for Real Madrid cup game as Ancelotti backs ref complaints

MADRID — Carlo Ancelotti said Kylian Mbappe would miss Real Madrid's upcoming Copa del Rey quarter-final against Leganes with a bruised calf and backed his club's complaints about Spanish refereeing on Tuesday.

French striker Mbappe was hacked down by Espanyol's Carlos Romero during their 1-0 La Liga defeat on Saturday with the defender avoiding a red card and going on to score the winning goal against the league leaders.

On Monday Madrid sent a letter to the Spanish football federation blasting refereeing in Spain as "rigged" and "completely discredited".

"Mbappe started to train today, yesterday we gave him an extra day of recovery," Ancelotti told reporters.

"He has a bruised calf, he trained normally but tomorrow he will not be available for the game."

Ancelotti said the decision not to send off Romero was "inexplicable" after the game and reiterated his point ahead of the Leganes clash.

"We're talking about something that's inexplicable, we're talking above all about the welfare of the players, and what Madrid's message asks for is an explanation and that seems right to me," said Ancelotti.

"We want an explanation about what happened and why nothing was done to look after the welfare of the player."

Ancelotti also said Jude Bellingham was set to miss the Leganes game with a knock, along with David Alaba, who was ruled out with a thigh injury earlier Tuesday.

The Austrian defender will miss between two and three weeks, according to Ancelotti.

Alaba, only recently back from a year-long knee injury absence, will be unavailable for the derby clash in La Liga against Atletico Madrid on Saturday and is unlikely to feature in the Champions League play-off tie against Manchester City.

Los Blancos travel to face the Premier League side in Manchester on February 11 and then host the second leg on February 19.

Antonio Rudiger is a major doubt for the game with another thigh injury, leaving youngster Raul Asencio and midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni as Madrid's likely centre-back pairing.

Eder Militao and Dani Carvajal are long-term injury absentees for Madrid in defence.

"Unfortunately in the last two days we've lost two important players, that's something we did not contemplate... Alaba was ready to play tomorrow, as he had good feelings," said Ancelotti.

"It's a moment of emergency which we have to bear out, because these are small problems, Alaba will be out for 15-20 days, Rudiger the same, so we have to deal with it with [the players] we have."

Hussein Irbid defeat Wihdat in the first leg of the Super Cup Final

By - Feb 03,2025 - Last updated at Feb 03,2025

AMMAN — Hussein Irbid secured a crucial victory over Wihdat in the first leg of the Jordan Super Cup final on Sunday at King Abdullah Stadium. Despite Wihdat took the lead in the first half while Hussein Irbid responded with a dominant performance, turning the match around and putting themselves in a strong position ahead of the second leg.

The match started with both teams showing high intensity, but it was Wihdat who found the net in the 32nd minute. A well-placed cross from Amer Jamous found defender Yousef Abu Jazar, who rose above the defence to head the ball past Abu Laila.

However, Hussein Irbid wasted no time to respond. Just a minute later, they equalised through Adham Qurashi. A defensive clearance from Wihdat’s backline fell kindly to Qurashi, who calmly slotted the ball into the corner of the net. The quick response shifted the momentum in Hussein Irbid’s favour, and they ended the first half with growing confidence.

Coming into the second half, Hussein Irbid displayed clear dominance, exploiting defensive gaps in Wihdat’s backline and creating multiple scoring opportunities. Their persistence paid off in the 54th minute when Majdi Attar put them ahead. After receiving a precise pass from the wing, Attar controlled the ball and found the net, assisted by an excellent setup from playmaker Yousef Abu Jabalush.

With Wihdat struggling to regain control, Hussein Irbid continued to press forward. In the 64th minute, they further extended their lead with a well-executed third goal. Mahmoud Mardi delivered a perfectly timed pass to Rezik Bani Hani, who finished with composure, securing Hussein Irbid’s 3-1 advantage.

With this victory, Hussein Irbid not only claimed an important win but also positioned themselves ahead of the return leg. Their ability to capitalise on Wihdat’s defensive sloppiness and their clinical finishing played a decisive role in securing the win.

Wihdat now faces a tough challenge in the second leg, scheduled for February 6 at Al Hassan Stadium in irbid, where they must overturn a two-goal deficit to keep their Super Cup hopes alive. Meanwhile, Hussein Irbid will aim to maintain their momentum and complete their title bid with another strong performance.

As the two teams prepare for the decisive match, all eyes will be on whether Wihdat can mount a comeback or if Hussein Irbid will solidify their dominance and lift the Super Cup trophy.

McIlroy and Lowry charge at Pebble Beach but Straka leads

SAN FRANCISCO — Sepp Straka birdied four of the last five holes to grab a one-stroke lead over Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry after Saturday's third round of the PGA Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

The famed oceanside layout was struck by gusting winds, heavy rains and cold conditions for much of the day but Straka rallied for a two-under 70 to stand on 16-under-par 200 while McIlroy and Lowry battled through to shoot seven-under-par 65s.

Austria's Straka, who stumbled out of the lead with three bogeys to start the back nine, closed his late run with a four-foot birdie putt at the par-5 18th to regain the top spot.

"It was a bit of a roller coaster out there," Straka said. "Things got pretty tough. Wind. Rain. I didn't handle them too well. Struggled all day with speed on the greens because of the wind. Didn't adjust really well until the last few holes."

Straka, who won his third PGA Tour title just two weeks ago at the American Express event, opened with back-to-back birdies. But his second shot at the 10th faded right over a cliff and onto the beach to start a three-bogey run.

He answered with birdie putts at 14 and 15, sank a 29-foot birdie putt at the par-3 17th, then blasted out of a bunker to four feet at 18 and sank the putt.

"Really proud of the way I stuck it out and came back to get some birdies coming in. Hit some really big putts."

Four-time major winner McIlroy birdied three of the last four holes and 2019 British Open champion Lowry birdied three of the final five.

"It got really squally around seven, eight nine 10 for us. For me to play those holes at even par was huge," McIlroy said.

"Then it started to settle and it's a little more sheltered on the back nine and it was nice to pick up a few birdies on the way in."

Lowry had seven birdies, two bogeys and an eagle but battled conditions much of the day.

"Shot a good score but it was pretty miserable out there at times," said Lowry. "It was very important to birdie the easy holes because the hard holes were really hard."

England's Justin Rose and South Korea's Tom Kim each shot 68 to share fourth on 202 with Australian Cam Davis, who shot 69.

Northern Ireland's McIlroy seeks his 27th career PGA Tour triumph while Irish pal Lowry seeks his fourth PGA victory and first since he and McIlroy combined for last April's pairs crown at New Orleans.

"Let's hope one of us does the business," Lowry said.

McIlroy hopes for a rare California triumph.

"Tomorrow would be big for a lot of reasons," McIlroy said. "It's exciting to try and get my first win of the season. Historically, the West Coast hasn't been that good for me. Haven't played great at this golf course."

 Three-quarter shots

Third-ranked McIlroy birdied four of the first eight holes to make his early charge.

He dropped his approach inside three feet at the 15th and tapped in for birdie, then sank a 26-foot birdie putt at 16 to grab the lead alone.

Lowry matched him with a birdie putt from just inside 17 feet at 16.

McIlroy hit the week's longest drive at the par-5 18th, 346 yards, then dropped his approach just inside 35 feet and two-putted to grab the lead.

Lowry matched him at the top again with a birdie at 18, blasting out of a greenside bunker to just outside seven feet and sinking the putt for the last of four back-nine birdies.

Man City face Real Madrid in pick of Champions League play-off ties

By - Feb 01,2025 - Last updated at Feb 01,2025

PARIS — Reigning champions Real Madrid will face 2023 winners Manchester City in the plum tie of the play-off round of this season's Champions League, following Friday's draw.

It is the fourth year running in which the sides have been drawn against each other in a knockout tie, with Real emerging victorious in a penalty shoot-out in the quarter-finals last season.

City, who scraped through after finishing 22nd in the league phase in this first season of the new format for Europe's elite club competition, knew they faced a tough draw with Bayern Munich their other possible opponents.

Pep Guardiola's team will be at home in the first leg on February 11 before going to Spain for the return on February 19.

"It feels like a derby already," Guardiola said at a press conference on Friday.

"Four years in a row facing Real Madrid. But Bayern or Madrid -- both was really tough. Hopefully we can arrive in the first leg here, and then at Madrid, as best as possible."

Real won a dramatic semifinal tie on the way to lifting the trophy in 2022, but City gained revenge at the same stage in 2023 as they went on to become champions.

Carlo Ancelotti's side then came out on top last season, while Real won a semifinal tie between the sides in 2016 and City won in the last 16 in 2020.

"We know each other very well," said Emilio Butragueno, Real's director of institutional relations, to Spanish media.

"They are a really great team who have the experience and are used to these types of games, so they will be very difficult opponents.

"But this competition is very special for us and we will play the second leg at home, at the Bernabeu."

Elsewhere, Celtic will face six-time European champions Bayern, after the Scottish champions reached the knockout stage for the first time in 12 years -- Celtic will be at home in the first leg on February 12 and go to Germany six days later.

All-French tie

Paris Saint-Germain will play surprise package Brest in an all-French tie, while Juventus play PSV Eindhoven and Feyenoord take on AC Milan in two ties between former winners of the competition.

Last season's Europa League winners Atalanta, who finished one place outside the top eight which offered a direct path to the last 16, will face Club Brugge of Belgium.

Sporting of Portugal were drawn against last season's runners-up Borussia Dortmund, while Monaco will take on Benfica having lost at home to the Portuguese club in the league phase.

The play-off ties will take place next month, with the eight winners going through to the last 16 along with the eight highest-placed sides from the league phase.

Liverpool, Barcelona, Arsenal, Inter Milan, Atletico Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen, Lille and Aston Villa are the sides already through to the last 16.

Those teams finished in the top eight in the standings in the 36-team league phase -- the first season of the new format for the competition saw all competing clubs placed together in one giant pool, each playing eight games against eight different opponents.

The draw for the remainder of the competition is partly pre-determined, meaning that whoever emerges triumphant in the tie between City and Real knows they will play either Atletico Madrid or Bayer Leverkusen in the last 16.

The draw for the last 16 onwards will take place on February 21, and it remains to be seen if Liverpool derive any advantage from having come first in the league phase.

Arne Slot's team will play either PSG or Brest, or Monaco or Benfica, in the last 16 in March.

This season's Champions League final will be played at the Allianz Arena in Munich on Saturday, May 31.

‘No awkardness’ for Dupont’s France with Jegou, Auradou selection

By - Jan 31,2025 - Last updated at Jan 31,2025

PARIS — France captain Antoine Dupont said on Thursday the inclusion of Oscar Jegou and Hugo Auradou in the team to face Wales in this week’s Six Nations opener has had no impact on the squad.

Flanker Jegou and lock Auradou were investigated over rape claims last year before they were dismissed and have been named on the bench for Friday’s game in Paris where they will make first Test appearances since the incident.

The case in Argentina against the 21-year-old forwards was dropped in December, but the complainant’s lawyer has appealed with a hearing set for February 10-11.

“I haven’t felt any type of awkwardness this week or last week,” Dupont told reporters.”We’ve stayed focused on our objective of this first match with all it signifies for the rest of the competition.

We’ve focused on ourselves, our game and that has been enough to take up our time and energy,” the scrum-half added.

Dupont’s side are looking to deny champions Ireland a record third straight Six Nations title but face a trip to Dublin during a run of three consecutive games on the road.

Villa won’t sell Watkins to Arsenal insists Emery

By - Jan 31,2025 - Last updated at Jan 31,2025

Aston Villa’s English midfielder #27 Morgan Rogers celebrates scoring the team’s fourth goal during the UEFA Champions League football match between Aston Villa and Celtic at Villa Park in Birmingham, central England, on Wednesday (AFP photo)

BIRMINGHAM, United Kingdom — Unai Emery insisted Aston Villa will not sell Ollie Watkins after Arsenal reportedly made a £60 million ($74 million) bid just hours before the England striker helped his team reach the Champions League last 16 on Wednesday.

Emery’s side survived a scare against Celtic to win 4-2 at a raucous Villa Park and seal automatic qualification via an eighth place finish in the league phase.

They had led through Morgan Rogers’ double in the first five minutes, but Adam Idah netted twice in the space of 145 seconds to haul Celtic level just before half-time.

Watkins ignored the speculation over his future as he rescued Villa with a clinical second-half strike to restore their advantage.

The 29-year-old missed a penalty after his goal, but Rogers completed the first treble of his career in stoppage time to ensure Villa progressed without the need for a play-off.

Arsenal’s mooted approach for Watkins was ill-timed from Villa’s point of view, given the significance of their clash with the Scottish champions.

Reports after the game suggested Villa had snubbed Arsenal’s offer and Emery offered no incentive for the Gunners to increase their attempt to buy a player who has scored 11 times in 32 games this season.

“Watkins is our striker. I know you want to ask about it, but I told you, today is not the day,” a visibly frustrated Emery said.

Arsenal are looking for a striker after Gabriel Jesus suffered a season-ending knee injury.

If Watkins, who joined Villa from Brentford in 2020, is still at the club when the transfer window closes on Monday, there appears to be a strong chance that Jhon Duran will leave for Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr.

The Colombia striker has mostly been used as a substitute by Emery despite some impressive performances this term.

‘A huge challenge’

Asked about Duran’s future, Emery wouldn’t rule out selling him in a reported £64 million deal.

“I don’t know if Jhon Duran is leaving but if he is, it is good news for us because he is leaving because it is good money,” the Spaniard said.

“Tomorrow or Friday we can talk about the transfer. Until everything is done I don’t want to speak, because in football everything can happen.

“The club is working and trying to compete in the transfer window because we need some players. Some can leave, but it is not time to speak about it.”

Celtic were already certain to reach the play-off round after last week’s win over Young Boys.

But Celtic’s hopes of avoiding one of the tournament’s giants were dashed as they learned holders Real Madrid or Bayern Munich will be their next opponents.

Brendan Rodgers’ team have to wait until Friday’s draw to discover which of the two European heavyweights blocks their path to a last 16 berth.

The Celtic boss conceded it will be a massive task to beat either club, but he believes they are capable of causing a seismic upset.

“We know it’s either Bayern Munich or Real Madrid in the next round, so that’ll be a huge challenge,” Rodgers said.

“It’s what the players deserve for what they’ve given over the course of the eight games.

“We’re building confidence and showing we’re a team that can play and make it difficult for the top teams.”

Celtic have qualified for the knock-out stages for the first time in 12 years despite a humiliating 7-1 loss at Borussia Dortmund in October.

“Scotland gets a wee bit of stick in its football. You can clearly see we have teams who have courage to play,” Rodgers said.

“The word that strikes me at the moment is pride. We’re nowhere near the resource levels of teams in the Premier League, but we can still be competitive.”
