Neymar says 2026 World Cup will be his last

By - Jan 09,2025 - Last updated at Jan 09,2025

SAO PAULO — Neymar said that the 2026 World Cup will be his last adding he was confident that Brazil would qualify for the finals in North America.

"I know this will be my last World Cup, my last shot, my last chance and I will do everything I can to play in it," the 32-year-old attacker, who has not played for Brazil in more than a year, told CNN.

He also told the American news network in the interview published on Tuesday that he would not rule out reuniting with former Barcelona teammates Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez at US club Inter Miami

"Obviously, playing again with Messi and Suarez would be incredible," Neymar said at an award ceremony in Dubai.

Brazil has struggled in South American World Cup qualifying.

After 12 of the 18 rounds, they are fifth in the 10-nation group. But the top six are guaranteed places in the World Cup and Brazil are five points ahead of Bolivia in seventh.

"I have a lot of faith in the team, in the players who are emerging, who are young," he said. "We're not in a position where we would like to be."

"I think together we can achieve something very big. We have a year, a year-and-a-half to work, to do the right things to reach the World Cup," Neymar said.

Neymar started Brazil's first four qualifying games but went off injured at half time as they lost to Uruguay in October 2023. After knee surgery he was out for a year.

He returned for his Saudi club Al Hilal with two brief appearances in October and November but injured a hamstring and has not played since. He said he is targeting the World Cup.

"I want to be there, I'm going to try to do my best, to work very hard so that I can be with the Brazilian team."

He will be 34 by the time the competition in the USA, Canada and Mexico, kicks off.

He could play in the United States before then. Al Hilal will appear in the expanded Club World Cup in the United States in June where Miami, with Messi and Suarez, will also be competing.

"They are my friends." said Neymar, who also played with Messi at Paris Saint-Germain. "We still speak to each other. It would be interesting to revive this trio."

"I'm happy in Saudi Arabia, but who knows? Football is full of surprises.

"When the news came out that I was leaving Paris Saint-Germain, the transfer window was closed in the United States, so I didn't have this option."

The nomadic mini-city behind the Dakar Rally

By - Jan 08,2025 - Last updated at Jan 08,2025

BISHA, Saudi Arabia — Television loves the Dakar Rally with its crisp, dramatic images of cars, motorbikes and trucks ploughing through the blood-red sands and dunes of Saudi Arabia.

But television doesn't show the whole picture, veering its lens away from the camp of 3,500 people, six planes, 11 helicopters, 100 trucks and 70 buses -- the gigantic logistical machine that moves a mini-city in the desert from stage to stage and keeps the show, figuratively, on the road.

Set up under tight security on a 25-hectare sand plain in the Bisha region in the south-west of the country, the Dakar start bivouac was in full swing in these early days of the 2025 edition.

Night and day, generators chunter away next to white tarpaulin structures as large as aircraft hangars. Trucks fill the cisterns of the 200 or so toilets and showers, while others sprinkle water on the roads to settle the dust raised by the constant stream of vehicles.

Roaring sandstorms whip up around the sea of small camping tents, in which most of the inhabitants of this itinerant community sleep. No five-star hotels here.

The tent that makes up the canteen is a massive 1,600 square metres and sits next to a games arcade, sports fields, two shops and a stage with a giant screen.

It's a whole self-contained little world far from the cities which has to be transported throughout the 12 stages.

"The basic mission of logistics is to put in place the people and resources so that each service, customer and competitor can operate and experience their event in the best possible conditions," Guillaume Kleszcz, logistics director for the ASO organisation, told AFP.

On each Dakar, the organisers have to provide around 10 bivouacs like this one, which follow the competitors as they make their way across the Arabian Peninsula, where the competition has pitched its tent since 2020.

Almost every day, a new mini-city will have to be created from scratch in the midst of sand and stones.

In duplicate

"Each site takes around 10 days to set up," says Arnaud Calestroupat, Dakar logistics manager. "First we level the ground, then we install the structures, the electrics."

As far as possible, the logisticians duplicate what they can to get as far ahead as possible in the assembly.

For example, there are two copies of the race control centre. The one used in bivouac 1 goes directly to bivouac 3 with the one in bivouac 2 sent in advance to bivouac 4, and so on.

Similarly, the catering tent, which will serve up in the region of 100,000 meals over the duration of the rally, will be available in four different versions, which will alternate with each other.

Thanks to these rotations, the organisers are almost two bivouacs ahead of the race.

Each area is structured in the same way.

"In the centre is the technical area, which is the work area," says Calestroupat.

"Opposite is the living area, which is accessible to everyone, where everyone can meet and get together. And around these two large areas will be all the paddocks."

The paddock is where the teams have their living quarters.

Not everything can be cloned, however, starting with the people.

At each change of bivouac, 500 people, including organisers, press and teams, are moved at dawn by specially chartered planes so that they can be at the finish point, several hundred kilometres away, even before the start of the race.

As for the television production team, they must have finished their work by early evening to pack up the equipment and transport it overnight by lorry to the next location.

There, it is immediately re-installed so that it is ready to go again when the cars and bikes start the next morning.

This gigantic scale requires an army of men and women: out of the 3,500 people usually accommodated at a bivouac, the organisation and the various service providers account for some 800 to 900 people.

But none of this will be seen on television which will focus instead on the men and women bravely throwing their vehicles across the dunes in a bid to win the rally.

And no one would have it any other way.

New Zealand crush Sri Lanka by 113 runs in 2nd ODI to win series

HAMILTON, New Zealand — New Zealand ripped through Sri Lanka's top order Wednesday to win the rain-reduced second one-day international in Hamilton by 113 runs and clinch the series.

Sri Lanka spinner Maheesh Theekshana took a hat-trick as the home side posted 255-9 off 37 overs, but the tourists could only muster 142 all out off 30.2 overs in response.

It followed New Zealand's comfortable nine-wicket win in Wellington to go 2-0 up in the series, with the third match to be played in Auckland on Saturday.

Sri Lanka's top order has misfired badly in both games.

They slumped to 22-4 at Seddon Park, leaving little chance of reaching their target of 256 in a match reduced to 37 overs each because of early rain.

Kaminu Mendis top-scored with his ODI best of 64 off 66 balls, but fell to a spectacular running catch from Daryl Mitchell from the bowling of Will O'Rourke to seal Sri Lanka's fate.

Janith Liyanage's 22 was the next best score in a Sri Lanka chase marred by two run-outs and a series of risky shots that didn't pay off.

O'Rourke was too quick for the tail, taking 3-31 off 6.2 overs while Jacob Duffy was responsible for some of the early damage, claiming 2-30, including the key scalps of Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis.

Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka said their run target should have been achievable.

"I think it was a fair score for batsmen in this kind of small ground, and it's a fair pitch," he said.

"I think again the bad batting in the power play cost us the game."

Earlier, recalled off-spinner Theekshana capitalised on some wayward New Zealand hitting to finish with 4-44 off eight overs.

He removed Mitchell Santer and Nathan Smith with successive deliveries at the end of the 35th over.

The hat-trick was completed -- all from mistimed lofted shots -- when Matt Henry was caught off the first ball of the final over.

It helped to pull back a New Zealand innings which threatened to surpass 300 when opener Rachin Ravindra raced to 79 off 63 balls and Mark Chapman scored 62 off 52.

The pair put on 112 for the second wicket, ending when Chapman holed out to long-off from Theekshana.

Ravindra departed soon afterwards, caught brilliantly at short cover by Asalanka off leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga (2-39).

Ravindra, who struck nine fours and a six, believed his balanced batting style was tailored for the 50-over format.

"I do enjoy the ODIs, although you don't see as many games happen anymore, but it's a format I grew up watching, and I think it suits the way I bat," said the 25-year-old, who scored 45 in the first match.

"I think it's a nice, natural tempo being able to go out there and play cricket shots."

Giannis triple-double propels Bucks over Raptors

LOS ANGELES, United States, Jan 7, 2025 — Giannis Antetokounmpo posted his fourth triple-double of the season and Damian Lillard scored 25 points to lead the Milwaukee Bucks to a 128-104 NBA victory over the Toronto Raptors on Monday.

Antetokounmpo scored 11 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and kept the Bucks offense clicking with his season-high 13 assists as the Bucks snapped a two-game skid.

Milwaukee had lost four of their last five matches, with all of those defeats coming against teams with losing records. But they handled the 8-28 Raptors convincingly, despite the absence of Khris Middleton with an ankle injury.

Bucks coach Doc Rivers said Antetokounmpo's passing -- including 10 assists in the first half -- "set the whole tone to our team".

"When your best player does that, it becomes contagious and the ball just moved," Rivers said.

The only downside for the Bucks was a cut Antetokounmpo suffered on his right little finger when he hit the rim on a block attempt late in the first half.

Rivers said it required stitches to stop the bleeding, but Antetokounmpo wanted to stay in a game in which he and Lillard were both able to rest the entire fourth quarter anyway.

In Chicago, Zach LaVine scored 35 points with 10 rebounds and eight assists as the Bulls rallied from a 19-point third-quarter deficit to beat the San Antonio Spurs 114-110.

Coby White added 23 points, driving for a go-ahead layup then throwing down a dunk to put the Bulls up 113-110 with 15.9 seconds left, and LaVine adding a final free-throw to close it out.

The Bulls withstood another standout performance from San Antonio star Victor Wembanyama, who had 23 points, 14 rebounds, four assists and eight blocked shots.

In Detroit, Cade Cunningham scored 32 points and handed out nine assists as the Pistons erased an early 22-point deficit to beat the Portland Trail Blazers 118-115.

Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 11 of his 26 points in the fourth quarter for Detroit, draining back-to-back three-pointers to put the Pistons up 109-106 with less than three minutes to play.

Portland twice pulled within one point and were down 117-115 after a three-pointer by Anfernee Simons with 12 seconds left.

But Malik Beasley made one of two free throws and came up with a steal to seal the Pistons' fourth straight win.

Suns halt skid

Phoenix coach Mike Budenholzer's decision to shake up his starting lineup paid dividends in Philadelphia, where Bradley Beal came off the bench and scored 25 points to lead the Suns to a 109-99 victory over the short-handed 76ers.

With the Suns on a four-game losing streak, Budenholzer shifted Beal and Jusuf Nurkic to reserve roles. Phoenix trailed by as many as 12 points in the first quarter and were down by four at halftime.

But Beal scored 20 points in the second half and the Suns bench out-scored the Sixers reserves 54-7 overall.

Tyrese Maxey scored 31 points and handed out 10 assists, and Kelly Oubre Jr. scored 26 points with 11 rebounds for Philadelphia, who were without Joel Embiid and Kyle Lowry.

The injury-ravaged Orlando Magic beat the suddenly struggling Knicks 103-94 in New York.

Cole Anthony scored 24 points and Wendell Carter Jr. came off the bench to score 19 for Orlando, who remain without their top four scorers in Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner, Jalen Suggs and Moritz Wagner.

Jalen Brunson and Mikal Bridges scored 24 points apiece for the Knicks, who lost their third straight on the heels of a nine-game winning streak.

In Memphis, Jaren Jackson scored 35 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the Grizzlies in a 119-104 victory over the Dallas Mavericks, who were without Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving and dropped their fifth straight match.

The Minnesota Timberwolves, fueled by 37 points from Anthony Edwards, snapped their three-game losing streak with a 108-106 come-from-behind victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.

Kyrgios says tennis integrity 'awful' after doping scandals

By - Jan 06,2025 - Last updated at Jan 06,2025

BRISBANE, Australia — Nick Kyrgios lashed out at what he believes is the lenient treatment of world tennis number one Italian Jannik Sinner for a failed drug test and said integrity in the sport was "awful".

Sinner twice tested positive for the banned steroid clostebol in March.

However, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) accepted his argument that the steroid entered his system due to contamination from his physiotherapist and opted not to suspend him.

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) subsequently appealed the decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport, with a verdict pending.

Kyrgios has been scathing about the ITIA decision in the past and didn't hold back in a press conference ahead of his return to the game at the Brisbane International after an 18-month injury lay-off.

"Tennis integrity right now, and everyone knows it, but no one wants to speak about it -- it's awful," said the Australian.

"It's actually awful and it's not okay. I know that people don't like it when I just speak out about things, be honest about things.

"For a kid that grew up playing tennis, I enjoyed the competition, I enjoyed playing.

"I can get emotional, I can throw a racquet, but that's nothing compared to cheating and taking performance-enhancing drugs."

'It's disgusting'

Asked whether he was accusing Sinner of cheating, Kyrgios told journalists to look at the facts.

"He did fail two doping tests at separate times, as well," Kyrgios said.

"It wasn't one after the other -- they were a different time frame, so I mean, if you think that that's the way that it got in his system, if that's how you think it's happened, then.

"But, I mean, if he didn't do anything wrong, then why did they take his prize money and points away? Obviously they found something wrong with it."

With former women's World No.1 Iga Swiatek also having been suspended for a doping violation in 2024, Kyrgios said the sport's image was being tarnished.

"I just think that it's been handled horrifically in our sport," he said.

The ITIA accepted that Swiatek's violation was not intentional and she received only a one-month ban.

"Two World No.1  both getting done for doping is disgusting for our sport. It's a horrible look," said Kyrgios, who has been out of the sport since suffering knee and wrist injuries at the 2022 US Open.

Kyrgios has had wrist reconstruction and said while it was a success, he was unsure how the wrist would cope with tournament play.

"I'm just not going to take anything for granted," he said.

"I'm going to go out there and play. It's literally going to be a day-by-day symptomatic injury moving forward.

"If I play a long match, jam it the right way, who knows how it's going to pull up the next day. That's the type of injury it is."

Kyrgios's comeback began against rising French star Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard who beat him in the first round of Brisbane tennis tournament. Kyrgios will continue to fight for a better and more consistent results at the Australian Open that starts on January 12.

Football team regroups, new players recalled

AMMAN —  As 2025 ushers in the resumption of World Cup qualifiers, football fans will switch focus this month from local competitions to the national team’s agenda for Round 3/Group B matches for the 2026 World Cup.

The squad regrouped as of Sunday with Moroccan coach Jamal Sellami recalling a host of new players headed by U23 team star goalie Antwan Awad to finalise the lineup ahead of upcoming matches. Jordan is slated to play Palestine on March 20 and South Korea on March 25 before facing Oman and Iraq in the last group qualifiers in June.

The squad will continue their current training camp in Amman until the weekend before the coach finalizes the lineup for the training camp in Qatar later this month, which will include a series of friendlies.

In the last qualifiers in November, Jordan held Iraq 0-0 and Kuwait 1-1 to drop to third in the group, after Palestine drew 1-1 with South Korea and Iraq beat Oman 1-0. Earlier, Jordan held Kuwait 1-1, beat Palestine 3-1, lost 2-0 to South Korea and beat Oman 4-0.

The coach’s  defensive tactics and replacements were the main points under scrutiny and have come under fire from analysts after the last two qualifiers. Observers critiqued the team’s performance underlying that the individual efforts guided the squad while pointing out that reserve players should be given more playing time as they could not convert to goals when replaced too late in the matches.

Recalling players to test out readiness and expand the base of the national team was seen as crucial after the injury list lately included start strikers Montpellier’s Mousa Ta’mari, Yazan Nu’eimat, Ali Alwan, Noor Rawabdeh and  Yazeed Abu Laila.

18 Asian nations are playing in three groups in home and away format with the top two from each group advancing directly to the World Cup while the rest will play Round 4 in two groups with group leaders advancing and a possible ninth team advancing through intercontinental play-offs.

Thunder win streak hits 14 as Wemby triumphs in 100th NBA game

WASHINGTON — Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 33 points to lead the Oklahoma City Thunder to their 14th consecutive NBA victory, a 117-107 home win over the New York Knicks on Saturday.

The Thunder matched the longest win streak in franchise history from the 1995-96 season, when they were the Seattle SuperSonics, and snapped New York's nine-game win streak, the Knicks' longest since 2013.

It was only the fourth time in the NBA's 79-year history that teams on win streaks of nine or more games faced each other.

Canadian star Gilgeous-Alexander hit 12-of-26 from the floor and 7-of-7 from the free throw line while Jalen Williams added 20 points and Aaron Wiggins had 19 off the bench as Thunder reserves outscored the Knicks bench 35-5.

"They made big plays all night," said Gilgeous-Alexander of his bench. "We're a roster of 15 men, 15 professionals, 15 really skilled basketball players. Guys were ready for their moment."

The Knicks closed the second quarter on a 23-10 run for a 66-54 half-time lead, Mikal Bridges scoring 19 of his team-high 24 points in the first half.

But the Thunder pulled within 88-80 entering the fourth quarter and an 8-0 Oklahoma City run capped by an Isaiah Joe three-pointer pulled the hosts ahead 92-91 with 8:15 to play.

The Thunder went on a 10-0 run with Wiggins hitting a three-point play and a three-pointer for a 108-101 lead with 2:22 remaining and held off the Knicks from there.

"Our [half time] message was just stick to our identity. We've gone down at half time the past two or three games. We've been there before. We know it's a long game, a lot of things can change," said Gilgeous-Alexander.

"We've just got to play to our identity as much as we can and when we do so, we usually win."

Frenchman Victor Wembanyama was a winner in his 100th NBA game, making two key plays in the last seconds of San Antonio's 113-110 triumph at Denver.

On the eve of his 21st birthday, the (2.21m) star assisted on Chris Paul's go-ahead jumper with 54 seconds remaining and stole a Nikola Jokic pass with four seconds to play to set up Devin Vassell's dunk for the final points.

In a battle of superstar big men, 2024 NBA Rookie of the Year Wembanyama had 35 points and 18 rebounds with four assists while three-time NBA Most Valuable Player Jokic had 41 points and 18 rebounds plus nine assists.

Wembanyama had a historic first season, the only campaign where an NBA player had more than 1,500 points, 700 rebounds, 250 assists, 250 blocked shots and 100 three-pointers.

This season, "Wemby" is averaging 25.6 points, 10.0 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 3.9 blocked shots a game.

More history for LeBron

NBA all-time scoring leader LeBron James passed Michael Jordan for the most 30-point games in NBA history with his 563rd, the 40-year-old superstar scoring 30 points in the Los Angeles Lakers' 119-102 home victory over Atlanta.

Anthony Davis had 18 points, 17 in the first half, and 19 rebounds for the Lakers. Trae Young led Atlanta with 33 points.

NBA-best Cleveland improved to 30-4 with a 134-122 victory at Dallas, the Cavaliers stretching their win streak to nine games powered by Evan Mobley's 34 points and 10 rebounds.

The Mavericks, who dropped their fourth consecutive game, were without Luka Doncic due to a left calf strain.

Boston's Derrick White scored 23 points while Jayson Tatum and Payton Pritchard each added 20 to give the reigning NBA champion Celtics (26-9) a 109-86 victory at Houston.

The Rockets, guided by former Boston coach Ime Udoka, fell to 22-12. They lost forward Jabari Smith for 4-8 weeks after he suffered a fractured left hand in practice on Friday.

In a matchup of the NBA's worst clubs, C.J. McCollum scored 50 points on 18-of-27 shooting and host New Orleans beat Washington 132-120.

At Sacramento, Malik Monk scored 31 points to power the host Kings over Memphis 138-133.

Tristan da Silva scored a career-high 25 points to lead Orlando's 106-97 victory at Toronto while Tobias Harris scored 24 points to lead Detroit over visiting Charlotte 98-94.

Premier League chief fears Club World Cup's impact on Man City and Chelsea

By - Jan 02,2025 - Last updated at Jan 02,2025

LONDON — Premier League chief executive Richard Masters fears this year's Club World Cup could create "great difficulty" for Manchester City and Chelsea ahead of next season's English top-flight campaign.

The two clubs will be England's representatives in FIFA's expanded 32-team event in the United States, with players' unions threatening legal action on welfare grounds and national leagues unhappy about the potential knock-on effects on their own competitions.

The Club World Cup final is due to be played on July 13, with the 2025/26 Premier League season starting on August 16.

"The leagues and the players' unions are not happy with the decisions that are being taken at a global level," Masters told Sky Sports.

"We've seen the Club World Cup come in, and obviously that is going to have an impact on the Premier League.

"If either Manchester City or Chelsea get to the final of that competition, the Premier League starts four weeks later, and all players are supposed to have three weeks off as part of the contractual commitment.

"So how does that work? With great difficulty I would say."

'Premier League is not a pension fund'

Masters, meanwhile, insisted English football is "not on a financial precipice" as he reiterated the Premier League's concerns about the potential impact of an independent regulator on the game.

The Premier League spent more than £45 million ($56 million) in legal costs during the 2023/24 season as it attempted to uphold its rules amid challenges from clubs.

And there will have been additional and significant legal fees this season for the Premier League given their major disciplinary case against Manchester City is still ongoing.

The reigning champions were charged in 2023 with more than 100 alleged breaches of the Premier League's financial rules.

An independent commission heard the case between September and December, with an outcome now pending.

City have also challenged the legality of the league's associated party transaction (APT) regulations, which seek to ensure deals done with organisations linked to a club's ownership are at a fair market value.

Both the current and former British government's aim in supporting an independent regulator is to safeguard the financial sustainability of clubs in the top five tiers of English football.

Masters, however, insisted too many regulations could damage the excitement on which the Premier League thrives.

"We have that jeopardy, we have that constant fizz of compelling entertainment," he said.

"There are many different reasons [for the Premier League's global popularity] but that, I think, is what separates us from others."

He added: "We have always been pro investment within measured risks. The Premier League is not a pension fund, it is a place where capital is put at risk. There is no certainty of outcome -- that is one of the things that makes it interesting.

"We do worry that a new regulatory function might be risk-averse and might inhibit clubs' ability to invest. And the ability to invest is key to competitive balance, and that jeopardy that I'm talking about."

WASHINGTON — Josh Hart delivered his third triple-double of the season on Tuesday to spark the New York Knicks to a 126-106 victory at Washington that stretched their win streak to eight games.

Hart had 23 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists for his ninth triple-double with the Knicks while Karl-Anthony Towns had a game-high 32 points and 13 rebounds.

Jalen Brunson and O.G. Anunoby each scored 18 points for New York, which improved to 23-10.

The Knicks led 59-57 at half time over the Eastern Conference doormats and pulled away in the third quarter before dominating the fourth to win.

"We executed, we got stops, we played fast," Hart said. "We played to our strengths. Sometimes it takes us a little while to wake up. We always do."

At Salt Lake City the Denver Nuggets got triple-doubles from Nikola Jokic and Russell Westbrook in beating the Utah Jazz 132-121.

Jokic had 36 points, 23 rebounds and 10 assists while Westbrook contributed 16 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists to ignite the Nuggets.

Michael Porter added 21 points for Denver while Jamal Murray and Christian Braun each scored 20 for the Nuggets (18-13).

The NBA-best Cleveland Cavaliers, led by 25 points from Darius Garland and 23 by Donovan Mitchell, rolled over host Golden State 113-95 to improve their win streak to seven.

Reserve Moses Moody led the Warriors with 19 points while Stephen Curry managed only 11 points on 4-of-14 shooting, 3-of-11 from three-point range.

Embiid leads Sixers

Philadelphia's Joel Embiid scored 37 points and grabbed nine rebounds to power the 76ers to their fourth victory in a row, a 125-103 triumph at Portland.

Tyrese Maxey added 23 points for the Sixers.

At New Orleans, James Harden sank four free throws in the final 17 seconds to give the Los Angeles Clippers a 116-113 victory over the host Pelicans, the NBA's worst club dropping a 10th consecutive game to sink to 5-28.

Norman Powell scored a game-high 35 points while Harden added 27 as the Clippers improved to 19-13.

De'Aaron Fox scored a game-high 33 points and the Sacramento Kings, who trailed by as many as 18 points, beat visiting Dallas 110-100 to snap a six-game losing streak.

The Kings closed the third quarter with a 17-2 run for an 83-77 lead entering the fourth, which began with an 11-4 Sacramento run for a 94-81 edge as the hosts pulled away to stay.

The Mavericks were without Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving.

Elsewhere, Coby White had 23 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists to spark the Chicago Bulls' 115-108 overtime victory at Charlotte.

Miles Bridges, who had a game-high 31 points for the Hornets, hit a three-pointer with 1.1 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime at 98-98.
