Palace's Mateta gets 25 stitches after 'reckless' kick to head

LONDON — Jean Philippe-Mateta said he is doing well and hopes to be back soon after being hospitalised by a horrific challenge from Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts.

Roberts was sent off just eight minutes into Saturday's FA Cup fifth round tie, which Palace won 3-1, after catching Mateta's head with his boot as he raced out to clear the ball.

Referee Michael Oliver only issued a red card after a VAR review.

Mateta received lengthy treatment, including oxygen, on the pitch before being stretchered to an ambulance and transported to hospital.

"Thank you for all your kind messages. I'm doing well. I hope to be back very soon. And stronger than ever. Well done guys for a great job today," Mateta posted on Instagram.

Palace said later on Saturday that Mateta had been discharged from hospital.

"He received specialist treatment and 25 stitches to a severe laceration to his left ear. All scans were clear and JP is feeling well," the club said.

"He will now rest and recuperate over the following days where his progress will be monitored by our club doctor."

Palace manager Oliver Glasner said the challenge could have ended the Frenchman's career.

"Just imagine if he hits his face straight, with his power, with the studs, it is the end of JP's career," said Glasner.

"I'm pretty sure he didn't want to injure JP in this situation, but I also think that you have to decide when you make such an impact, you just can't do it in this way."

Mateta had scored eight goals in his previous nine games and has 15 in total for Palace this season.

The 27-year-old also netted five times as France won silver at the Paris Olympics last year.

Palace chairman Steve Parish described as the "most reckless challenge" he had ever seen.

"What we know, he's got a bad gash behind his ear and a head injury. Obviously he's at the hospital. So, we hope for the best," Parish told the BBC.

"That is the most reckless challenge on a football pitch I think I've ever seen and I think he needs to have a long hard look at himself, that lad, because he's endangering a fellow professional, maybe his life, with a challenge like that."

Palace made use of the man advantage for virtually the whole game to book their place in the quarter-finals.

Japhet Tanganga's own goal broke the visitors' resistance before Daniel Munoz prodded in a second.

Wes Harding pulled a goal back for the Lions, 13 minutes into first-half stoppage time added on for Mateta's treatment.

Palace were made to wait until 82 minutes to ensure progress when Eddie Nketiah's looping header found the far corner.

Ronaldo closes on Asian Champions League crown as Saudi sides reign

TOKYO — Cristiano Ronaldo's Al Nassr travel to Iran in the Asian Champions League next week with his side one of three from Saudi Arabia in the last 16 of the region's top club competition.

Saudi teams dominated the tournament's West zone league stage, with four-time Asian champions Al Hilal leading Al Ahli and Al Nassr in the top three in the final table.

Saudi Arabia has shaken up football by spending heavily on stars from Europe, starting with Ronaldo's move in late 2022, and the desert nation will host the World Cup in 2034.

Al Hilal, the last side from Saudi Arabia to win the Champions League, in 2021, topped the league stage on goal difference from Al Ahli with both unbeaten in eight matches.

Al Nassr finished five points clear of fourth-placed Al Sadd of Qatar and Ronaldo's side take on Iran's Esteghlal over two legs, the first in Tehran on Monday.

Former Real Madrid, Juventus and Manchester United star Ronaldo scored six goals in the league stage and is still going strong at the age of 40.

A first Asian crown would add to a bulging trophy haul that already includes five UEFA Champions League titles.

The Portuguese has been joined at Al Nassr by Colombian striker Jhon Duran, although the big-money signing from Aston Villa was sent off during a Saudi league game last week.

The red card infuriated Ronaldo, who lashed out at the referee and booted the ball into the stands before continuing to remonstrate with the officials.

Coach Stefano Pioli will need his players to keep their heads against Esteghlal, who Al Nassr beat 1-0 in the league stage thanks to a late goal from former Manchester City defender Aymeric Laporte.

"We must try to improve every day as we have not yet reached the level where we can compare ourselves with the first level of world football," Pioli said.

Al Hilal can no longer call on the services of Brazil's Neymar but they will still start as heavy favourites in their last-16 tie against Uzbekistan's Pakhtakor.

Al Ahli meanwhile saw their front three of England's Ivan Toney, Brazil's Roberto Firmino and Algeria's Riyad Mahrez all enjoy goalscoring form in the league stage.

German coach Matthias Jaissle will need them keep it going in the last 16 against Qatar's Al Rayyan.

"We achieved a historic record in this edition without losing, and this is not easy," he said.

"We have the support of the fans and we look forward to winning this tournament."

Japanese clubs lead East

Japanese sides led the way in the East zone's league phase, with last season's runners-up Yokohama F-Marinos topping the table ahead of compatriots Kawasaki Frontale.

Yokohama, now coached by Gareth Southgate's former England assistant Steve Holland, play China's Shanghai Port in the last 16.

Kawasaki face Shanghai Shenhua while a third Japanese team, the domestic champions Vissel Kobe, take on South Korea's Gwangju.

At least one non-Japanese team is guaranteed to advance in the East zone, with Malaysia's Johor Darul Ta'zim meeting Thailand's Buriram United.

Johor's Argentine coach Hector Bidoglio has been impressed with his team's performances so far.

"Before the start of the competition we set our target to qualify for the next stage," he said after they booked their place with a 5-2 win over South Korea's Pohang Steelers.

"But now we have not only qualified but we did it by showing our type of football."

Last-16 games are played over two legs, with the winners going through to a finals stage to be played in Saudi Arabia in April and May.

IOC candidate Samaranch says experience key to handling ‘complex world

By - Feb 28,2025 - Last updated at Feb 28,2025

PARIS — International Olympic Committee (IOC) presidential candidate Juan Antonio Samaranch Junior told AFP he has the experience to deal with heads of state in a rapidly changing world where previously undisputed truths such as “universality, fraternity and unity” are now disputed.

“It’s a very complex world,” the urbane banker said in an interview at AFP’s headquarters on Wednesday.

The 65-year-old Spaniard and his six rivals to succeed Thomas Bach as the most powerful person in global sport will learn their fate when their fellow IOC members vote on March 20 in the Greek resort of Costa Navarino.

If successful Samaranch Junior would make history — his father of the same name was IOC president from 1980 to 2001 and transformed the organisation into a commercial powerhouse.

He was first elected an IOC member the year his father stepped down and has forged a successful career within the body. He was elected vice-president in 2016 and again in 2022 while also occupying other high-profile roles.

All of which, he says, has given him the skillset to handle the rapidly shifting sands around the globe since Donald Trump was reelected US president.

“I think that the paradigm in which we live for the last 50 years about peace, order, it’s being really challenged,” Samaranch Junior said.

“So we are looking at a world which is pretty complicated, but the key word to me is experience.”

He admits he does not have all the answers but he has the cool head required to deal with the plethora of problems that will arise.

“You have to have the relevant experience, and yes, I’ve been involved for many, many years, both in business experience, dealing with world business leaders, and in Olympic and non-Olympic matters with heads of state,” he said.

Samaranch said things are so serious globally that one quality alone must be in the IOC members’ minds when they vote.

“It is not about the face or the gender, or the continent,” he said.

“Even in the easiest of times, we should elect the best person for the job.

“This is too important and too relevant for too many people to experiment.”

‘War chamber’

Even the normally unflappable Samaranch appears astonished by the rapidity with what was generally accepted as the basic tenets of society being turned on their head.

“Our job is going to be more difficult,” he said.

“Until a year ago or six months ago, we could go anywhere. We say universality, fraternity, unity. And that was undisputed truth.

“Now it’s a very disputed truth.”

Samaranch, though, says such sweeping change makes the IOC even more relevant.

“Our values, I think, are more needed in the world than ever before because we are one of the only beacons left of this idea of universality, fraternity.

“The Olympics continue to be or are right now, unfortunately, one of the very, very few islands of hope of universality... and trumpeting and celebrating differences among humanity.”

As for his own leadership style, he says he wants it to be more collegiate and he should be in a better position to put that into practice than Bach was for part of his tenure.

“He has lived through the extraordinary years of Covid, not travelling, not being able to communicate in person with anybody, so that created a tendency of those crisis years... dealing with [the] Tokyo [Olympics] being postponed,” said Samaranch.

“That created a ‘war chamber’ with him and the administration, so it is very easy to understand.

“So I think unless something similar happens, my idea is we need to go back to the more usual governance that we had, which is all the IOC members together.”

Samaranch said last year’s Paris Olympics were the best Games he has ever attended but one dark cloud hung over Bach’s final one in charge — the issue of transgender athletes and those whose gender eligibility is questioned, such as two of the gold medal-winning women boxers.

Samaranch acknowledged the issue had created “social alarm” and the world expected leadership from the IOC.

His response, if elected, would be to set up a “scientific council” to establish a clear line to “ensure full protection of the women category” — and he says a solution is required before the 2026 Winter Olympics.

“We should have that before the Games in Milano-Cortina. It is urgent,” he said.

“We want to have extraordinary Games in Milano-Cortina, and we want to make sure every shadow that we can avoid and every issue that can be solved before to make the event shine, we have to do it.

“So it’s just a matter of working. If it’s a short time, we work harder. It’s not about money, it’s about intelligence.”

Much has been made of his late father’s Olympic past but while he says he is “beyond proud” of Samaranch Senior’s achievements at the IOC he says the body is now unrecognisable to the one he ran.

“Nothing of what he and all these extraordinary people did to bring Olympism back to life, nothing of what they encountered are remotely relevant today,” he said.

Chelsea trash Southampton, Villa beaten by Palace in race for Champions League

LONDON — Chelsea moved into the Premier League's top four with a 4-0 demolition of hapless Southampton, but Aston Villa's hopes of Champions League football next season diminished after a 4-1 defeat at Crystal Palace.

After a run of three consecutive defeats, Chelsea badly needed a response against bottom-of-the-table Saints, who are set for an immediate return to the Championship.

The Blues duly delivered with three first-half goals through Christopher Nkunku, Pedro Neto and Levi Colwill for just a third league win 11 games.

Before kick-off at Stamford Bridge, a small band of Chelsea fans gathered to protest against the club's owners over the club's form and discontent over ticket prices.

Once the action got under way, it was a much-needed comfortable evening for Enzo Maresca's men which the Italian will hope can restore confidence among his squad.

Nkunku took his tally for the season to 14 but only three of those have come in the Premier League as he has often had to play reserve to the injured Nicolas Jackson.

The Frenchman stooped to head in a corner at the back post before teeing up Neto to blast home a second.

Colwill headed in Neto's free-kick to make the points safe before the break.

Marc Cucurella rounded off the scoring with a calm finish from teenager Tyrique George's cross.

"We needed that, the fans needed that and the club needed that so we are happy," said Maresca.

"The priority is to bring this club to where this club should be - the Champions League. It will be like this until the end of the season - we will be up and down and we need to be ready."

Victory takes Chelsea two points above Manchester City into fourth.

Thanks to English clubs' strong performance in European competition this season, a top-five finish is likely to be enough for a place in next season's Champions League.

Eagles soaring

Villa had rejuvenated their hopes of a second consecutive season in Europe's elite competition after beating Chelsea on Saturday.

But Unai Emery's men have won just one of their last seven league games after a capitulation at Selhurst Park.

"After today, with a loss, it is difficult to try to explain everything," said Emery.

"We have to move on and be motivated in the competitions - FA Cup and Champions League and get the balance in the Premier League."

Ismaila Sarr's first-half opener was cancelled out early in the second period by Morgan Rogers.

Jean-Philippe Mateta quickly restored Palace's advantage before Sarr and Eddie Nketiah maintained the Eagles fine form.

Oliver Glasner's side have won seven of their last nine games to rise to 12th, just six points behind Villa in 10th.

Brighton won the battle of the south coast clubs with ambitions of European football next season, over Bournemouth 2-1.

Joao Pedro won and converted a penalty on 12 minutes to give the Seagulls the lead.

A wonder strike from Justin Kluivert levelled for the Cherries, but Danny Welbeck's winner moved the sides level on points.

Bournemouth sit seventh on goal difference with Brighton in eighth, but now just one point behind fifth-placed City.

Wolves missed the chance to pull further clear of the relegation zone after a 2-1 home defeat to Fulham.

A fast start to both halves saw the visitors take the points as Ryan Sessegnon struck inside the first minute and Rodrigo Muniz got the winner two minutes into the second period.

Wolves remain five points above the bottom three.

League leaders Liverpool can take another step towards just their second title in 35 years when they host Newcastle on Wednesday.

Second faces third as Arsenal visit Nottingham Forest, while Tottenham host City.

Although Jordan had secured their qualifying spot, this week’s qualifiers were a chance for incoming coach Spaniard Juan Manuel “Piti” Hurtado who replaced Wisam Al Sous, to test the readiness of the lineup and make changes ahead of the FIBA Cup.

Jordan and Saudi Arabia qualified from Group D to the upcoming FIBA Asia Cup with Jordan beating its Saudi guests 78-68 in Amman before playing Iraq in Baghdad, where the squad started off trailing by 19 points before catching up at halftime 55-51.

The third and fourth quarters saw Jordan’s Freddy Ibrahim turn the match around scoring 23 points including 10 in the last quarter. In the absence of star centre Ahmad Duweiri who left to be with his UAE club team, Ibrahim and Dar Tucker combined as they relied on 3 point shots to make a memorable comeback and seal the match.

Saudi Arabia maintained second place after they beat Palestine 93-71 and booked the second qualifying spot, while Iraq will play for a qualifying spot later .

A total of 24 teams played Round 1 qualification matches for the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup in three windows, while also battling for qualifying spots for the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup alongside hosts Qatar who automatically advanced. The top two teams of each group moved to the FIBA Asia Cup and the six third-placed teams will now play a qualifying round for the final four places.

The team hopes to build on their feats in 2023, when they won a historic first ever team medal — a silver at the Asian Games. In addition, they played at the FIBA World Cup. Alongside the junior men’s team in 1995 and 2025, basketball has been the only Jordanian team to reach a World Cup in a team sport.

Troubled Rangers sack under-f ire coach Clement

By - Feb 25,2025 - Last updated at Feb 25,2025

GLASGOW — Scottish giants Rangers on Sunday said they had sacked under-fire coach Philippe Clement in the aftermath of Saturday’s embarrassing 2-0 defeat against St Mirren. Clement, 50, had been facing mounting pressure throughout a dismal campaign and the Scottish Premiership club have now put the Belgian out of his misery after less than two years in charge at Ibrox.

“Rangers Football Club can confirm it has tonight parted company with men’s first-team manager, Philippe Clement,” a club statement said. “The club would like to put on record their sincere thanks to Philippe for his hard work and dedication during his spell in charge.

A further update from the club will follow in due course.Rangers’ humiliating Scottish Cup exit against second tier Queen’s Park two weeks ago left Clement in a desperate battle to avoid the axe.

But a first loss to St Mirren at Ibrox since 1991 proved to be the final straw for the Rangers board amid growing fan unrest. Former Club Brugge and Monaco boss Clement described the display against St Mirren as “by far the worst I’ve seen in all the time I’ve been here”.

Kohli, Rohit 'have a lot of cricket left' after sending Pakistan to brink

DUBAI — Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have "a lot of cricket left in them", former India opener and Champions Trophy winner Shikhar Dhawan says, adding that the mere presence of the veteran duo can unsettle any opposition.

Kohli hit an unbeaten 100 on Sunday, his 51st ODI century, as India swept aside Pakistan by six wickets in Dubai to stand on the cusp of the ICC Champions Trophy semifinals.

Pakistan, who are hosting all of the games except those involving India, are on the brink of elimination after their second defeat of the tournament.

Rohit made a quickfire 20 at the top of the innings as India went after 242 for victory and Kohli took charge after the captain's exit to steer the team home with 45 balls to spare.

Kohli, 36, and Rohit, 37, have struggled for form since retiring from T20 internationals after last year's World Cup win, with speculation swirling that they could soon retire.

But Kohli rolled back the years with his first ODI century since November 2023.

"Virat standing on the crease, his presence is big. The opposition have fear in them," said Dhawan, who is in Dubai as a tournament ambassador.

Kohli went past 14,000 ODI runs early in his innings, becoming only the third batsman to achieve the landmark after Sachin Tendulkar and Kumar Sangakkara.

Rohit struck form with a century in India's 3-0 home sweep of England earlier this month and hit a 36-ball 41 in India's opening win over Bangladesh.

"Recently Rohit scored an amazing century, but it's not about a century or half-century," said Dhawan, a swashbuckling opener who played his last ODI in 2022 and won the Champions Trophy in 2013.

"Today Rohit played a quick 20 runs, that also carries value. He created that fearless environment for the whole team," he added.

"He's got a great impact in early overs in today's cricket.

"Things have changed, so now it's good to take that risk and play aerial shots.

"We used to see it only in T20 cricket but now we see it in 50-over cricket.

"The Pakistan batsmen did not play any aerial shots, but Rohit came and took that risk, which played in India's favour."

Pressed on the futures of Rohit and Kohli, Dhawan said: "They have a lot of cricket left in them."

Spinner Kuldeep Yadav, who took a crucial 3-40 to peg back Pakistan, hailed man-of-the-match Kohli.

"There is only one big player in the team and that is Virat 'bhai' [brother], who played a brilliant innings," Kuldeep said.

"Hope that I can continue performing well," added the left-arm wrist spinner, who recently returned after hernia surgery.

"Obviously if you play good cricket, stick around with good players, and you know you have a good team with two senior players who are greats."
