IAF defectors may join election race though not happy with bill

By - Feb 27,2016 - Last updated at Feb 27,2016

AMMAN — The Islamic Action Front (IAF), the Muslim Brotherhood's political arm and the largest opposition party in the Kingdom, expressed dissatisfaction with the new draft 2015 parliamentary elections law on Saturday, as did members of three groups that defected from the party.

The three groups of defectors are racing against time to prepare what is needed to form new political parties before the upcoming parliamentary elections, whose date has not been decided yet. Members of the Zamzam Initiative and newly established Muslim Brotherhood Society have plans to establish a joint political party, while the Group of Elders,  a splinter of the IAF, is mulling forming another party, leaders from these groups told The Jordan Times.

However, they and the IAF said the draft elections law endorsed by the Lower House of Parliament last week does not live up to their expectations, citing primarily the absence of a proportional list at the national level.

Murad Adaileh, the IAF's spokesperson, said no decision has been made yet regarding the party’s participation in the new elections.

“Unfortunately, the Lower House did not consider remarks made by representatives of political parties and NGOs when they passed the bill,” Adaileh told The Jordan Times, adding that hundreds of meetings were conducted by the Lower House before discussing the law, but they “ignored” the main suggestions made by civil society organisations.

He added that the IAF Shura Council members call the shots when it comes to the party’s participation in the elections.

Meanwhile, Rheil Gharaibeh, founder of the Zamzam Initiative, said that although the bill does not encourage political parties’ participation in the upcoming elections, plans to establish a new political party, that include members of both the Zamzam Initiative and the Muslim Brotherhood Society, remain under way.

“We will start the registration procedures this week,” Gharaibeh revealed, adding that a notification for the party’s registration will be submitted to the Ministry of Political Affairs.

“As per the new law, any individual can form a list and run for the elections,” he said, noting that the decision to run in the elections has still not been made yet.

The “Group of Elders”, another faction of defectors who submitted their resignations to the IAF last December, also criticised the draft law.

“We want political representation rather than representation based on constituents,” Khaled Hasanain, the group’s spokesperson, told The Jordan Times.

Although the group was also studying the feasibility of forming another political party, the plan is not final following the rejection of their resignations by the IAF.

In December last year, 400 members, including top leaders and founding members, tendered their resignations to the leadership of the IAF. Last month, the party’s leadership decided to reject these resignations, throwing the ball back to the defectors’ field.

“We still believe that returning to the IAF is not the best option,” Hasanain said, adding that if the idea of the proposed party will be revisited. “We will likely agree on other formula to join the election race.”

The IAF refused to take part in the 2012 parliamentary polls, citing the injustice involved in the one-person-one-vote system and what they saw as lack of assurances that the vote would not be rigged as in a repeat of what happened in 2007.

King partakes in Florida Business Council meeting

By - Feb 27,2016 - Last updated at Feb 27,2016

AMMAN — His Majesty King Abdullah on Thursday night took part in the Business Council meeting in Florida, which attracted the participation of top executives from major US companies.

His Majesty discussed with participants prospects of cooperation with Jordan, which offers a safe and lucrative investment environment, according to a Royal Court statement.

The King also attended a dialogue session titled "Risk management", held on the sidelines of the council meeting. Panellists addressed current regional developments in the political and economic arenas and ways to deal with them, and listened to King Abdullah's insight into these issues.

His Majesty also briefed the businesspeople on the available investment opportunities and mega-projects the Kingdom is planning to implement in different vital sectors through effective partnerships with local, regional and international economic partners, especially in the fields of renewable energy, infrastructure, transportation and ICT.

The corporate leaders expressed “their admiration of the advanced level the Kingdom has reached, voicing their willingness to benefit from investment opportunities the Jordan’s economy provides in several sectors”, the statement said.

The 150-member Business Council was established in 1933 as an independent organisation that focuses on exchanging views and translating recommendations into tangible actions aimed at serving the public and private sectors in the US and the world.

SSC dismayed at compliance of self-employed with amended law

By - Feb 27,2016 - Last updated at Feb 27,2016

AMMAN — The Social Security Corporation (SSC) has expressed disappointment at the turnout of self-employed persons to subscribe to the agency after it has become mandatory.

An amended version of the law that provides for such a change in SSC law went into effect in January, making it obligatory for this category, including shopkeepers and craftsmen, to start paying contributions.

Since then, according to SSC spokesperson, Musa Sbeihi, only 5,727 have complied with the new rule, out of “tens of thousands” of self-employed persons.

In a statement, Sbeihi blamed the lack of law abidance on “low awareness of the importance of subscribing to the SSC”.

This decision aims at protecting self-employed persons and ensuring they benefit from the advantages of the system, including insurance against old age, loss of job for health reasons and death, he said, noting that this segment of workers in particular is subject to occupational hazards more than their peers in other sectors.

To be eligible to join the system, would-be subscribers have to be over 16 years old and below 60 for males and below 55 for females if they have not joined the SSC before, the spokesperson added, citing the 2014 Social Security Law.

Also, they should not be subject to other obligatory retirement systems.

AMMAN — The UN Development Programme (UNDP) has nominated Planning and International Cooperation Minister Imad Fakhoury to be a member of "a limited ministerial team to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals [SDGs]", the ministry said in a statement released Saturday.

Fakhoury took part in a ministerial meeting held in New York last week on the occasion of the UNDP's 50th anniversary, which aimed at discussing ways of backing and implementing the SDGs.

The minister also met with UNDP Administrator Helen Clark, where he stressed that Jordan is working to integrate the SDGs into national and sectoral plans and strategies.

He said the UNDP could offer support to Jordan in different fields relevant to integrating SDGs in its various strategies.

On the sidelines of the ministerial meeting, Fakhoury held a number of bilateral meetings with EU ministers, namely the ministers of Spain, Sweden, Norway and Poland to follow up on the implementation of the Jordan Compact, which was an outcome of the London donor conference.

Donors at the February conference had committed to provide financial support and different kinds of concessionary funding to Jordan despite its classification as a high middle-income country.

The minister reviewed in the meetings the impact of the protracted Syrian crisis and the refugee influx on Jordan's economy.

He also underlined the importance of the international community's implementation of its obligations.

The Jordan Compact includes funding the national response plan 2016-2018 to enable the Kingdom to meet the requirements of hosting Syrian refugees.
