Safadi, Kerry talk environmental protection

AMMAN — Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on Sunday met US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry.

Emphasising the importance of the strategic partnership between the US and Jordan, Safadi and Kerry reviewed means of enhancing cooperation in fields related to environmental protection and facing climate change, according to a Foreign Ministry statement.   

Safadi expressed appreciation for US ongoing support for Jordan, notably pushing forward the economic development in the Kingdom, highlighting the US’ leading role towards ending regional crises and achieving peace and stability.

Kerry said “Jordan is a strong and major ally for the US”, expressing his country’s appreciation for the Kingdom’s role towards overcoming regional challenges along with achieving regional security and stability, as well as a lasting and comprehensive peace. 

Kerry underscored the US commitment to ensure Jordan’s domestic water needs are secured through a diverse range of sources, while lauding Jordan’s contributions of solar-generated electricity to meeting the evolving energy needs of the region, according to a US embassy statement. 

The secretary lauded Jordan’s commitment to meeting the goals of the Paris Agreement, promoting greater regional clean energy trade and cooperation, reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the region, and providing a new source of fresh water for the Jordanian people, the statement said.
