AMMAN — Secretary General of the Royal Committee for Jerusalem Affairs (RCJA) Abdullah Kanaan on Saturday said that Israeli incursions into Al Aqsa Mosque and attacks on unarmed worshippers represent "brutal" scenes.

In an interview with the Jordan News Agency, Petra, Kanaan said that “these raids and scenes represent a message to the free world and its legitimate organisations that Israel – the occupying force and the apartheid power – is the status quo in Jerusalem”.

He noted that this Israeli approach is a direct threat to the authority of international organisations that are supposed to be the incubators of peace, law and justice in the world.

Historical facts, Islamic documents, and all resolutions issued by the United Nations and its affiliated organisations, including UNESCO, affirm that Al Aqsa Mosque/Al Haram Al Sharif belongs exclusively to Muslims, he said.

Kanaan stressed that Israel’s “dangerous measures” aim to tamper with Al AqsaMosque and demolish its yards to establish the alleged temple, which threatens international legitimacy and the region's security and peace.

In support and defence of the Palestinian cause, the RCJA stressed Jordan's "firm position" and the historic custodianship over the Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, the secretary general said, adding that the Kingdom remains the main supporter of Palestinian people and Jerusalem.

In this regard, Jordan supports the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and the establishment of their Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital on the pre-1967 borders, he noted.

Kanaan also called on Israel to end its actions "immediately" to achieve peace, security and stability, and comply with international legitimacy, respect agreements and Jerusalem's historic status quo and prevent its troops from entering Al Aqsa Mosque.
