PM, FM meet UN relief coordinator over refugees

AMMAN — Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour on Tuesday received UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Valerie Amos and discussed ways to enhance cooperation between Jordan and the UN in relation to the provision of humanitarian assistance for Syrian refugees. 

During his meeting with the UN official, Ensour said that as long as Jordan is complying with international law in keeping its borders open for refugees, the international community has to stand by the Kingdom and support it to shoulder its humanitarian responsibilities. 

The premier also highlighted the increasing pressure on the Kingdom’s economic sectors as a result of regional conditions.  Amos voiced her appreciation of Jordan’s efforts, expressing her understanding of the burdens borne by the Kingdom due to hosting Syrian refugees. 

Also on Tuesday, Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Nasser Judeh met with Amos. He expressed Jordan’s appreciation of the international entities working in the humanitarian field, noting that the Kingdom will continue to facilitate their mission.

Amos was in Jordan to attend Middle East and North Africa Regional Consultation for the World Humanitarian Summit, which was inaugurated by Judeh

At the event, Judeh said the economic challenges brought about by the refugee influx have  added burdens to the limited economic, financial and natural resources of the countries involved.
