Jordan, UN to continue coordination on Syrian refugee crisis

Sep 10,2014 - Last updated at Sep 10,2014

AMMAN — Jordan appreciates UN agencies' humanitarian assistance to Syrian refugees and their cooperation with local authorities, Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh said Wednesday.

At a meeting with UN Undersecretary General and Emergency Relief Coordinator Valerie Amos, Judeh voiced the government's keenness on maintaining coordination and cooperation with all UN agencies.

Talks focused on the humanitarian consequences of the Syrian crisis in Jordan, which hosts more that 600,000 Syrian refugees despite its limited natural resources and economic difficulties.

Judeh and Amos also discussed the efforts exerted by Jordan through its non-permanent membership in the UN Security Council in passing Resolution 2165 on humanitarian aid to Syrians inside their war-torn country, which will enable access to 3 million people in hard-to-reach areas.

Resolution 2165 was adopted by unanimous vote in July to enable UN aid delivery across four border crossing points, without needing the consent of the government of Syria.

For her part, Amos valued Jordan's humanitarian assistance to the Syrian refugees, calling on the international community to increase its support.
