Heading the Jordanian delegation, Chairman of the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission Khaled Toukan voiced Jordan's keenness to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes in accordance with the Jordanian nuclear programme.
He referred to Jordanian achievements in nuclear energy, including the extraction of uranium from Jordanian ore in 2021.
Toukan expressed appreciation to the IAEA for strengthening Jordan’s role as a hub for nuclear energy training by organising a six-month university course in radiation protection and safety, delivered in Arabic with the participation of 19 trainees from several Arab countries.
In a meeting with IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, the Jordanian delegation discussed means to improve cooperation in order to support the Jordanian nuclear programme.
Voicing the agency’s support for the Jordanian nuclear programme, Grossi lauded Jordan’s nuclear achievements, especially the Kingdom’s SESAME project.
Grossi also extended thanks to Jordan for hosting the International Conference on Research Reactors, which is organised by the IAEA, to be held in November 2023 at the Dead Sea.
