Momani receives Tunisian journalists

ANMAN — Minister of State for Media Affairs and Communications Mohammad Momani on Sunday stressed the importance of having an Arab community media that boosts awareness, and achieves a balance between freedom and responsibility.

During a meeting with a Tunisian delegation currently visiting Jordan, Momani asserted the government’s positive partnership with the media sector to regulate the profession, noting that all channels of dialogue are open with journalists.

Clothing bank launches summer campaign

AMMAN — The Charity Clothing Bank, one of the Jordan Hashemite Charity Organisation’s (JHCO) projects, on Saturday launched its second initiative to collect clothes, shoes, toys and money to distribute to underprivileged Jordanian families.

JHCO Secretary General Ayman Mefleh said the initiative aims at providing families with summer clothes in cooperation with the National Aid Fund and local charities.

121,755 patients treated at Egypt field hospital

Darfur UN mission leader praises Jordan’s peacekeepers

AMMAN — The Kingdom’s participation in UN peacekeeping missions is part of Jordan’s humanitarian efforts to achieve international peace, Public Security Department (PSD) Director Gen. Tawfiq Tawalbeh said Sunday.

At a meeting with UN Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) Police Commissioner Hester Paneras, Tawalbeh discussed organisational issues concerning the Jordanian PSD force participating in UNAMID.

Paneras praised the Jordanian contingent in Darfur, highlighting their excellent role in the UN’s largest peacekeeping mission in history.

Police officer honoured for role in containing 6th Circle fire

AMMAN — Public Security Department (PSD) Director Gen. Tawfiq Tawalbeh on Sunday honoured Ahmad Ramadan, a police officer from the West Amman Traffic Department, for his “dedication and courage in performing his duty”.

The PSD said Ramadan contributed to extinguishing a fire in a 15-storey building near the 6th Circle in Amman on Saturday.

Ramadan cut off the electricity to the building when he saw the fire, which prevented the occurrence of an electrical short circuit that could have spread the fire to other floors.

Ramadan then called the Civil Defence Department to extinguish the fire.

Hajj registration begins on Tuesday

AMMAN — Registration for Hajj (the greater Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca) will begin at 10am on Tuesday and will close at 10pm on Monday, May 26, Awqaf Minister Hayel Dawood said Sunday.

Those wishing to register should visit one of the branches of the Jordan Islamic Bank and pay JD5 per person, which is non-refundable, according to Dawood.

Judeh, IOM director discuss cooperation

AMMAN — Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh on Sunday met with International Organisation for Migration (IOM) Director General William Swing and discussed the ongoing cooperation between Jordan and the agency.

Judeh underscored the valuable role of the IOM and its services for Syrian refugees.

Swing emphasised the important humanitarian role that Jordan is undertaking in assisting Syrian refugees, stressing the importance of supporting the Kingdom to continue with its mission.

Ensour meets Arab fund director

AMMAN — Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour on Sunday met with Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development (AFESD) Director General Abdul Latif Al Hamad and discussed means to boost cooperation through funding projects of priority to the Kingdom.

The premier highlighted challenges facing Jordan and the possibility for AFSED to extend loans to fund small- and medium-sized businesses.

Prince Raad called for building on the committee’s achievements.

Voter turnout at industry chamber polls reaches 74%

AMMAN — Industry Ministry Secretary General Maha Ali on Sunday announced the results of chambers of industry elections in Amman, Irbid and Zarqa.

Ali said the overall voter turnout was 74 per cent.
