AMMAN — “Art is not accessible for everyone to enjoy it and I wanted to show that it can and should be,” said Lina Salah, a 22-year-old artist exhibited in a group exhibition held at Gallery 14 in Jabal Amman.

Bothered by the idea that art exhibitions tend to focus on visual stimuli, Salah decided to create art pieces combining the “vision” of blind individuals, the inspiration of music and her own creative methods.

Asking a group of blind and blind-folded people to draw or paint what they felt while immersed in a creative musical setting, the young artist then used those drawings to create abstract powerful pieces, using etching and silk screens.

“I think it brings a new dimension to art, which is accessible to more,” she told The Jordan Times over the phone, voicing her hope to see galleries based on the touching sense open in the future.

Salah is one of the six young artists whose works are currently on display at the gallery in a group exhibition that gathers the work of local talents all under 25 years of age.

“We realised that galleries in Amman, including ours, tend to showcase renowned artists, leaving youngsters who haven’t achieved fame yet out of the spotlight. This is why we decided to expose those six young talents to show the public that Jordan’s new generation has a lot to offer in terms of art and creativity,” said Hind Nasser, owner of Gallery 14.

Sama Shahrouri’s pieces, displayed in a series titled “Art from an awkward angle”, catch the visitors’ attention with its sketches of headless human figures.

“I chose this title because, on one hand, these figures look so realistic yet they are missing something crucial [the head]. On the other hand, the angles chosen are ones that make the body look very odd and different from a body in a normal position,” she told The Jordan Times.

“I come from a sculpture background and these sketches were a result of years of studying the human anatomy. I would choose a pose that I like and portray it. The bodies that I depict are not meant to be women as a gender, but to reflect humanity as a whole, without a specific identity,” Shahrouri added.

She noted that, because of the nature of her work, reactions were very diverse. “I was shocked by what people thought of my artwork; they had interpretations I never thought of. But this gave me an insight into what viewers see in my painting and it is really enriching,” the young artist explained.

For 23-year-old Asil Jabr, painting is “an attempt to give life to everything materialistic with colour and passion”.

She said that art is a constant challenge “to decode behaviours of people, expressions, movement and create a composition referring to internal relations”.

The young Jordanian artist also works with other media sectors to express herself such as writing, filmmaking, theatrical art and photography.

Bayan Kiwan, Diana Shawabkeh, Lina Salah and Tasnim Ja’abo were the other artists in the group exhibition which will run through December 9.

AMMAN — The Government on Wednesday signed two financing agreements of concessional joint loan with the French Development Agency (AFD) worth 150 million euros and a similar agreement with the German Reconstruction Bank (KfW) worth 75 million euros, to be followed by a similar agreement in 2018.

The agreements aim to support the public budget and finance the water sector policy, a planning ministry statement said.

The agreements were signed by Planning and International Cooperation Minister Imad Fakhoury, Marie-Hélène Loison, Director of Middle East and Southern Mediterranean Affairs at the AFD, and Stefan Zeeb, director of the KfW›s Middle East Department in the presence of Water Minister Hazem El Nasser, French Ambassador David Bertolotti, German Deputy Ambassador Ralf Schroer, director of the AFD Luc Le Cabellec and Director of KfW Christian Schaub.

Fakhoury said that the AFD will provide 150 million euros as a loan to the Jordanian government as part of the memorandum of understanding signed with the agency for the years 2016-2018, following France’s commitments at the London Conference.

This loan also represents the contribution of the French Agency to finance the programme titled “Support to Water Sector Reforms” (DPL).

The planning minister explained that the loan will be disbursed in two installments of 75 million euros each, noting that Jordan will pay fixed and concessional annual interest rate of 1.86 per cent to be determined at the date of withdrawal of each payment.

The second loan, which comes as part of the German aid programme, was recently committed at a value of 577 million euros, according to the statement.

KfW will provide a 75 million euros loan to the Jordanian government as a first payment of the bank›s total contribution from the «Water Sector Reform Support» financing loan, worth 150 million euros.

This is the first loan of its kind to support the public budget. A second financing agreement will be planned for the year 2018, for the second payment of the KfW’s contribution of 75 million euros, according to the statement.

The government will pay a fixed interest rate of 1.45 per cent, the statement said.

Fakhoury expressed Jordan›s appreciation of the French and German support to the Kingdom, especially in the vital sectors of water, sanitation and other priority projects.

He stressed that the government is working jointly with its French and German partners to finance projects within the executive development programme and the Jordanian response plan for the Syrian crisis.

Gov’t to set price ceiling for potatoes

AMMAN — As the price of potatoes in the local market has increased by almost two folds this month, the government is looking into measures to impose a price ceiling for the staple vegetable, according to a government official.

“The Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Industry and Trade are now in talks over setting a price ceiling for potatoes, whose prices are increasing in the local market for no justified reason,” a government official, who preferred to remain anonymous, said on Wednesday.

The Agriculture Ministry has warned retail traders in fruits and vegetables earlier this week against selling potatoes for high prices, noting that, if prices do not drop, price ceilings will be imposed.

“The step seeks to protect consumers by controlling prices. The local market is receiving 400 tonnes of potatoes every day; an amount that well exceeds the local market›s daily needs,” the official told The Jordan Times.

The official said that the price ceiling to be applied “if prices don’t drop in two days” will protect the rights of both consumers and traders.

The owner of a fruits and vegetables store in Arjan in west Amman, selling potatoes for JD1.35 per kilogramme, acknowledged that prices of potatoes have increased.

The grocer, who identified himself as Abu Tareq, claimed that potatoes available for lower prices, such as JD0.80 per kilogramme, “are rotten from the inside”.

Roua Hamad, a banker and mother of two, complained about the quality and price of potatoes in the local market.

“Everyone is saying that the quality of potatoes in the local market is not the same as before; they either have holes inside or have black spots in the middle. Now, we are buying bad quality potatoes for insanely higher prices,” Hamad said.

Five-year jail term upheld for man who molested, robbed four teenage boys

By - Dec 07,2017 - Last updated at Dec 07,2017

AMMAN —  The Court of Cassation has upheld a June 2015 Criminal Court ruling sentencing a man to five years in prison after convicting him of molesting and robbing four Syrian teenage boys in an Amman neighbourhood in September 2012.

The court declared the defendant guilty of luring the four teenagers to a deserted house with the help of three other men on September 11, where they undressed them and robbed them. The court sentenced him to 10 years in prison.

However, the court decided to immediately reduce the sentence to half because the victims dropped charges against them.

Court papers said that, on the day of the incident, the defendant was with three other men and they decided to rob the Syrian teenagers.

“They lured them to an apartment claiming that they wanted the young men to help them with some work then they pulled out sharp objects and a gun and asked the boys to undress,” the court said.

The defendants then tied every two together, stole their mobiles and wallets and left, according to the court verdict.
The three other men who were with the defendant had their verdicts upheld in a different court ruling.

The defendant had contested the Criminal Court ruling arguing that “the prosecutor failed to provide solid evidence to implicate his client in the case”.
However, the Court of Cassation ruled that the Criminal Court proceedings were correct and the defendant deserved the punishment he received.
The higher court comprised of judges Mohammad Ibrahim, Naji Zubi, Yassin Abdullat, Majed Azab and Bassem Mubeidin.
