Water minister checks on water supply to northern, central regions

AMMAN — Minister of Water and Irrigation Raed Abul Saud on Sunday conducted a surprise visit to the Jordan Water Company (Miyahuna) to check on water supply to Amman, Zarqa and Madaba, according to a ministry statement.

The minister headed a meeting with Miyahuna’s Executive Director Ghazi Khalil, Deputy Executive Director Mohammad Awamleh and Operations Director Mohammad Kharabsheh.

During the meeting, the minister and the Miyahuna officials discussed efforts and plan to face the increasing demand on water in light of the coronavirus crisis.

Khalil presented progress on operations and supply, noting that the company is running its water resources at the maximum to meet the rising demand for water. He added that in Amman alone, water consumption increased by 80,000 cubic metres per day.

The Miyahuna executive director noted that the company has increased water supply by approximately 6,400 cubic metres per hour in Zarqa, and 1,400 cubic metres per hour in Madaba.

Khalil said that the governorates have been provided with water tankers to address any surge in demand, according to the statement.

Also on Sunday, Abul Saud discussed with Yarmouk Water Company General Director Montaser Momani water supply to Irbid, Mafraq, Jerash and Ajloun, stressing the importance of giving Irbid and its districts special focus and attention in light of its isolation from the rest of the Kingdom, according to the statement.
