AMMAN — The Jordan Water Company (Miyahuna) on Sunday will start implementing a new water distribution programme in the capital, Zarqa and Madaba, an official at the company said on Saturday.
"Very slight changes were introduced under the new water distribution programme. Households in the three governorates will continue receiving water on the same day; however, the amounts were slightly altered in certain areas in accordance with demand," Miyahuna Operations Director Ghazi Khalil told The Jordan Times.
Under the distribution programme, households receive water once a week on a rotating basis. Scarce water resources compelled the Kingdom to initiate the programme in the early 1980s to ensure a sustainable water supply to subscribers.
"Households should receive water for 52 hours per week. The new schedule has been announced in local newspapers and will be uploaded on Miyahuna's website [www.miyahuna.com.jo]," Khalil underscored.
The company announces a new water distribution programme in May every year after the Kingdom's water budget is announced, and it introduces changes to the programme in light of its water allocations.
The Ministry of Water and Irrigation announced last week its summer water budget, under which allocations to different governorates were increased to meet a growing demand.
A total of 185 million cubic metres (mcm) were allocated for Miyahuna which serves a population of approximately 4.1 million people or 617,000 subscribers in the three governorates.
Miyahuna's water allocations for the summer months stands at 97.241mcm, according to the ministry, which said that the capital's water resources will supply Ruseifa, Zarqa, Um Rummaneh and Balqa with 49mcm to meet their water needs during summer.
