AMMAN — Six people have been arrested over the death of a teenager who was killed by festive firing at an event to celebrate an MP’s election, the Public Security Department (PSD) said on Wednesday.

An investigation committee was formed to follow up on the death of the 18-year-old, who was hit by a stray bullet at an event in east Amman celebrating the election of MP Yihya Saud.

The PSD said on Wednesday that the committee had apprehended six people and seized three weapons, in addition to three suspects who were arrested earlier in possession of two weapons.

An investigation is under way with the latest suspects, the PSD said, adding that one of the guns confiscated was an automatic weapon.

All five weapons were referred to the crime lab for ballistic tests to determine if any gun matches the bullet that killed the girl.

The PSD said the investigation was ongoing, after which all the details and pieces of evidence will be sent to the prosecutor who will proceed with legal action.

The death of the teenager during the celebration was the talk of Jordanians and social media users earlier in the week, particularly after a video was circulated on social media networks showing heavy shooting at the event.
