AMMAN — Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Ayman Safadi and British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly on Saturday held talks regarding the two countries’ robust partnership and continued efforts to develop cooperation in various areas.

The ministers discussed several regional and international developments, including the Palestinian issue, and Jordan's initiative to realise a political solution to the Syrian crisis through direct Arab-Syrian engagement and a step-by-step approach, according to a Foreign Ministry statement.

Safadi acquainted Cleverly with Jordan-led efforts to halt the deterioration in the occupied Palestinian territories by reaching a consensus based on stopping unilateral actions that trigger tensions, instigate new waves of violence and undermine the two-state solution.

Safadi told his British counterpart that Jordan continues these efforts in coordination with other countries, warning the envoy of the seriousness of the situation and the possibility of further escalation, the statement said.

He stressed the importance of exerting every effort to halt the deterioration, and create the political grounds necessary for resuming serious and effective negotiations to resolve the conflict on the basis of the two-state solution that results in establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the pre-1967 lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital, to live in security and peace alongside Israel, as the only way to achieve just and comprehensive peace.

Cleverly reiterated his country's support for the Kingdom's efforts, and expressed appreciation for the leading role played by His Majesty King Abdullah to prevent the situation from worsening and achieve a just and comprehensive peace.

Safadi stressed the importance of the British role in restoring calm by addressing causes of tension as well as the country’s role in efforts to achieve security and stability in the region.

The two officials agreed to meet again as soon as possible to hold extensive talks on various bilateral and regional issues.
