AMMAN — Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira on Monday affirmed that the two countries exert intensive efforts to expand economic, investment, tourism and security cooperation.

In a phone call, the two ministers discussed bolstering cooperation related to fertilisers, agriculture, tourism, and food security, according to a Foreign Ministry statement.

Jordanian-Brazilian trade volume rose from $418 million in 2021 to $577 million in 2022, as Brazil’s Jordanian potash imports increased from 139,000 tonnes in 2021 to 150,000 tonnes in 2022.

The two sides also referred to signing a memorandum of understanding between the Royal Jordanian airline and the Brazilian company Embraer to purchase 10 E-2 aircraft.

Reviewing mechanisms for jointly combating terrorism, especially through the Aqaba Process, in which Jordan and Brazil organised a meeting for combating terrorism in Latin America, the two ministers agreed to hold the second round of political coordination between the foreign ministries of the two countries as soon as possible.

The two sides also shed light on a number of international and regional issues, foremost of which was the Palestinian issue.

In this regard, Safadi expressed appreciation of the Brazilian government's support for Palestinians and their right to an independent, sovereign state with East Jerusalem as its capital on the lines of June 4, 1967, based on the two-state solution.

Warning of the continued deterioration of the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories, Safadi briefed the Brazilian minister on  efforts exerted by the Kingdom to stop the escalation and find a real political horizon to return to serious and effective negotiations to achieve a just and comprehensive peace based on the two-state solution.

Vieira affirmed his country's support for the efforts made by the Kingdom to achieve security and stability in the region, underlining the importance of the role of the Hashemite Custodianship over Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem.

Safadi also focused on the Jordanian initiative to resolve the Syrian crisis through direct Arab-Syrian cooperation.

Stressing the centrality of Brazil's role in Latin America, Safadi voiced Jordan's aspiration to build institutional relations of cooperation and coordination to serve the interests of the two countries whose diplomatic relations date back to 1959.
