Proposed amendments to SSC law aim to create comprehensive insurance for all — Rahahleh

AMMAN — The amendments to the Social Security Law focus on addressing inequities, taking demographic variables into consideration, increasing youth employment, and creating comprehensive insurance for all, said Director General of the Social Security Corporation Hazem Rahahleh on Saturday.

In a meeting organised by the Amman Chamber of Commerce, Rahahleh reviewed the most prominent features of the proposed amendments to the Social Security Law, noting that all amendments related to early retirement will be applied only to those who have less than 84 subscriptions by the end of 2022.

Amendments related to calculating average wages will be applied to subscribers whose subscriptions are less than 120 by the end of 2023, he said, adding that 90 per cent of subscribers will not be affected by the new amendments.

If the bill is approved, the SSC will provide support for education fees starting in the 2023-2024 academic year.

A total of 86,000 individuals have obtained optional subscriptions, contributing to a growth rate of 25 per cent, the highest increase since the establishment of the SSC, he said. 

Rahahleh said that amendments focus on providing health insurance to private sector employees and retirees, adding that it will cover all family members with a rate of 5 per cent of the pension, of which 4 per cent is used to cover treatment in private sector hospitals and 1 per cent is used to cover cancer treatments at the King Hussein Cancer Centre.
