AMMAN — HH Prince Mired, president of the Higher Council for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (HCD), on Monday met with Fares Al Sayegh, CEO of Roya Media Group, to discuss the media’s role in enhancing the rights of persons with disabilities in Jordan.
The meeting is part of a series of engagements initiated by Prince Mired to engage with media institutions, aiming to activate their role in addressing disability issues through providing objective media content that addresses the concerns of individuals with disabilities from a human rights perspective, moving away from stereotypical narratives that “either idolise them as superheroes or portray them as objects of pity”, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.
During the meeting, Prince Mired emphasised the importance of drawing more awareness to disability rights issues, also stressing the need to elevate disability rights issues on the agenda of media institutions. He also emphasised the need to address these issues and the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities in a pragmatic and unbiased manner, avoiding sensationalism and misleading portrayals.
Prince Mired expressed his appreciation for the efforts of Roya Media Group in employing people with visual impairments, including a blind anchor, as part of their media team.
He expressed his hope that this positive example would inspire other media institutions to follow.
