AMMAN — Police on Sunday night raided a brothel in the capital and arrested a group of men and women, all Arab nationals, including three minors.
Police received information about the brothel in Rasheed suburb and conducted a raid after monitoring the premises for a short period, Public Security Department Spokesperson Lt. Col. Amer Sartawi said.
“We arrested a group of men and women as well as three female minors, whom we referred to the anti-human trafficking unit,” Sartawi told The Jordan Times.
The police official added that the adult suspects were referred to the governor for further legal action.
Sartawi said investigators were concerned about the three minors found at the brothel and are following up closely with the anti-human trafficking unit to learn more about how they ended up there.
The unit was established in 2013 to follow up on human trafficking cases in Jordan.
The Kingdom has ratified several international agreements related to human trafficking, such as the Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Especially in Women and Children, which is part of the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organised Crime.
In addition, Jordan has adopted a national strategy to combat human trafficking, which focuses on prevention, protection, law enforcement and international cooperation to eradicate the phenomenon.
