AMMAN — The Criminal Court prosecutor on Sunday began questioning a man in connection with the alleged murder of a teenage girl in an East Amman neighbourhood, official sources said.

The 17-year-old victim was reportedly murdered by the suspect in the Queismeh neighbourhood on Sunday, Police Spokesperson Lt. Col. Amer Sartawi said.

“Police were notified about the incident and a suspect was arrested shortly after the murder occurred,” Sartawi told The Jordan Times.

The police official did not reveal the relationship between the victim and the suspect, the manner the victim was murdered or any other details related to the incident.

A senior judicial source told The Jordan Times that the Criminal Court prosecutor is currently questioning the suspect to learn more about the incident.

The victim's body was transferred to the National Institute of Forensic Medicine for autopsy, the judicial source added.

The Criminal Court prosecutor ordered that blood samples and tissue samples be taken from both the suspect and the victim for further analysis, the second source said.

The suspect was ordered detained at a correctional and rehabilitation centre for 15 days pending further investigations into the incident, the second source added.

Sunday’s incident was the second targeting a woman in Jordan in less than a week.

On Thursday, a 30-year-old man was charged with the manslaughter of his younger sister in Madaba while at her family's home.

In his initial testimony to investigators, the suspect claimed that "he was high on drugs and engaged in a heated argument with his sister that turned fatal".

"The suspect claimed that he pressed on his sister's neck with his hands following an argument resulting in her death by strangulation," senior judicial sources told The Jordan Times on Saturday.
