AMMAN — A new depression accompanied by an intense polar front is expected to plummet temperatures on Wednesday, bringing rain and snow in areas more than 800 metres above sea level, the Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD) said on Monday.

Snowfall is expected to continue until Thursday noon in areas higher than 800 metres above sea level, while in high mountainous areas in the south downpour is expected to extend at night, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported, citing the JMD forecast.

Snow accumulation is expected over areas 800 metres above sea level, while areas above 700 metres will witness scattered snow showers on Wednesday night and Thursday early morning.

Temperatures on Thursday are expected to fall 7-9°C degrees below annual average, Petra added.

The department issued several weather-related warnings, including low visibility caused by low-altitude clouds, flood formation in valleys and low lying areas, slippery roads due to snow accumulation and strong winds.

The JMD also warned of the danger of frost formation during late night hours on Monday in various regions.

The weather will be stable and very cold on Tuesday, with the appearance of low-altitude clouds and moderate southeasterly winds veering into southwesterly winds.

Temperatures in Amman will range between 10°C during the day and 2°C at night, while temperatures are forecast to reach a high of 6°C and a low of 0°C on Wednesday, and are projected to plummet between 4°C and 1°C on Thursday.

In Aqaba, temperatures are forecast to range between 18°C and 7°C on Tuesday, and between 15°C and 6°C on Wednesday, according to the JMD.
