Nakbeh turns 75, Palestinian struggle continues unabated

AMMAN — Monday marks the 75th anniversary of the Nakbeh, (catastrophe), commemorating the ethnic cleansing and forced displacement of 750,000 Palestinians from their hometowns and cities.

Today, they live in 58 refugee camps, which hold up to seven million refugees, according to UNRWA statistics, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

During the Nakbeh, Zionist extremists took control of 774 Palestinian villages and cities, 531 of which were destroyed. The inhabitants of the villages and cities were subject to massacres. The Israeli atrocities still continue today, the latest of which being the Gaza massacre which took place a few days ago.

Around 176 settlements were erected throughout the Palestinian West Bank, which was occupied in 1967, with the aim of erasing Palestinian history, Secretary-General of the Royal Committee for Jerusalem Affairs, Abdullah Kanaan said.

In the face of this tragedy and barbaric genocide, Israel continues its plan to complete its scheme of the Nakbeh by replacing the term Nakbeh with ''independence and establishment", Kanaan added.

Due to the historical, religious and national symbolism of Jerusalem, the city is undoubtedly at the forefront of Zionist agenda, which aims to impose false identity, instate illegal sovereignty, expel its Arab inhabitants and establish synagogues near the Al Aqsa Mosque, he said.

Kanaan stressed that the Royal Committee for Jerusalem Affairs affirms that the world and its legitimate organisations are facing a moral and humanitarian responsibility, outlined in the necessity to remove the reality of the Nakbeh from the oppressed Palestinian people. “Otherwise, the concepts of democracy, human rights and self-governance are empty slogans,” Kanaan said.

Kanaan pointed out that the Royal Committee for Jerusalem Affairs, along with the Hashemite leadership, which has historical Custodianship over Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, affirms that its support for the people of Palestine and Jerusalem will continue.
