Minister says ‘dumping’ labour market with guest workers harmed Jordanian

AMMAN — Labour Minister Ali Ghezawi on Tuesday said the ministry’s recent decision to freeze work permits to guest workers, except for domestic helpers and qualified industrial zones labourers, is aimed at organising the domestic labour market and addressing flaws, particularly in the agricultural sector.
Ghezawi said guest workers have to be subject to supply and demand on the market, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. In a statement, carried by Petra, the minister said that the large number of guest workers has worsened the unemployment problem in the Kingdom as “dumping” the domestic market with migrant workers has negatively affected job opportunities for Jordanians.
He added that the ministry is working to implement immediate measures and plans to provide employment opportunities for Jordanians, noting that inspection campaigns targeting illegal labourers will be intensified across the Kingdom.
