JD1.5m ‘cash-for-gold’ scam foiled

AMMAN — Badia Criminal Investigation Department (CID) personnel foiled an attempt to scam three Arabs into paying JD1.5 million in return for gold coins, the Public Security Department (PSD) said Sunday.

CID personnel tracked the suspects and found the buyers with one of them, trying to take them to the other two suspects, one of whom is an Arab, while the other introduced himself to the victims as a Jordanian government employee who owns 10,000 gold pieces that he wants to sell.

The two other suspects were arrested, with the CID confirming that the Arab man is wanted by court while the Jordanian has previous records of theft and fraud. Investigators discovered that the gold coins do not exist at all.

The PSD urged the public to call 911 and report any information on illegal transactions.
