Higher Population Council to aid Sudan counterpart

AMMAN — Secretary General of the Higher Population Council Abla Amawi, as the president of the Arab Council for Population and Development under the umbrella of the Arab League is participating in meetings aimed strengthening the capacity of the Sudanese National Population Council in Sudan.

Amawi stressed that the Jordanian council is considered an “effective model” for population councils and was chosen to represent the Arab region at the population summit meetings at its 52nd session in the United Nations, according to a statement from the Higher Population Council. 

In addition to its current selection by the United Nations Population Fund for this task, she pointed out that one of the objectives of the Arab Council for Population and Development is to promote the exchange of expertise between Arab states to prepare a future Arab population strategy.

The secretary general indicated that the council, through its participation in the meetings in Sudan, being held from January 5-11, will seek to identify linkages between the proposed strategy of Sudanese National Population Council and national planning and priorities, the statement said. 

The importance of developing the Sudanese National Population Council stems from the political change that took place in the Republic of Sudan, the statement said.

During the meetings, the council mission will the Jordanian Higher population Council’s experience with the Sudanese side to develop its population work.
