Amawi assumes role of secretary general at HPC

AMMAN — Dr Abla Amawi assumed her position as secretary general of the Higher Population Council (HPC) on Tuesday, according to a statement from HPC.
The HPC is the official authority that deals with population studies and information, which are used in relation to development.
The statement noted that Amawi has many years of distinguished service, most recently she served as deputy country director at the United Nations Development Programme in Pakistan, and as a senior programme manager in Gaza and Jerusalem.
She also served as country representative for UNWOMEN in Sudan and Egypt. Her other former assignments included: Governance team leader/senior advisor in Palestine; regional manager for Arab States for Public Administration Reform and Capacity Development; assistant resident representative and senior advisor with UNDP/Jordan and Sudan in charge of social development.
According to the statement, Amawi earned her MA and PhD from Georgetown University in Washington, DC.
The secretariat of the HPC is hosted at the Jordanian Hashemite Fund for Human Development and the secretary general represents the fund as a member of the council, the statement said.
