AMMAN — A Royal Decree was issued on Thursday approving the Cabinet's decision to appoint Brig. Gen. Hussein Hawatmeh as director general of the Gendarmerie Department, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
He succeeded Maj. Gen. Ahmad Sweilmin, who was among three security leaders sacked last week for "lack of coordination" among them.
A similar Royal Decree was issued on Wednesday to appoint Brig. Gen. Atef Messeideen, succeeding Gen Tawfiq Tawalbeh, to head the Public Security Department after promoting him to major general.
Sweilmin and Tawalbeh were referred to pension, while former interior minister, Hussein Majali, resigned his post.
Majali was succeeded by veteran Salameh Hammad, who had held the post twice in the 1990s.
In a statement following the sacking of the three officials, Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour said the decision came "in light of His Majesty King Abdullah's commitment to asserting the rule of law, enhancing the principle of security for all and showing no tolerance towards those who undermine the foundations on which the Kingdom was established”.
