AMMAN — Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Ayman Safadi on Tuesday welcomed the United Nations Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, as part of Jordan's ongoing efforts to find a political solution to the Syrian crisis based on the Jordanian initiative.
The initiative is based on direct Arab engagement with the Syrian government in a political dialogue aimed at resolving the crisis and addressing its humanitarian, security and political repercussions, according to a Foreign Ministry statement.
Safadi affirmed full coordination with the United Nations with regard to Jordan's initiative to resolve the crisis and to share its details with the UN.
He also briefed Pedersen on the Kingdom's efforts in providing assistance to the Syrian people after the catastrophic earthquake in Syria and Turkey.
Pederson acquainted Safadi with efforts to reach a political solution to the crisis in Syria, stressing the importance of continued cooperation between the Kingdom and the UN in this area.
Also on Tuesday, Safadi met with Undersecretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator at the UN, Martin Griffiths, about conditions in Syria and existing cooperation to help Syrians after the recent earthquakes and challenges resulting from the drop of international support to Syrian refugees and host countries.
During the meeting, Safadi stressed that the Kingdom continues to help affected people in Syria and Turkey cope with the consequences of the earthquakes that struck the two countries in February.
For his part, Griffiths commended the Kingdom's efforts and role in hosting refugees and providing assistance to those affected by earthquakes.
