AMMAN — The Ministry of Environment will launch a national campaign in August to combat littering and raise environmental awareness, officials said on Wednesday.

The ministry will cooperate with municipalities, civil societies, schools and broadcasters to clean up public areas and raise environmental awareness, Environment Minister Yaseen Khayyat said in a statement e-mailed to The Jordan Times.

The campaign will also target schoolchildren with programmes and competitions to teach them good environmental practices, Khayyat said, noting that this will be implemented in cooperation with the Ministry of Education.

The minister called on the industrial sector to join the campaign and shoulder its responsibility towards local communities that suffer from pollution as a result of industrial activities.

He also invited environmental NGOs and civil society institutions to participate.

The ministry’s spokesperson, Isa Shboul, said a committee is formulating the campaign’s initiatives, noting that it will be a continual endeavour to combat littering across the country.

“It will be constant and will be a national plan to raise the public’s environmental awareness,” Shboul told The Jordan Times.

The campaign will be launched at a press conference in August, he added.
