AMMAN — Water and Irrigation Ministry cadres, in cooperation with concerned authorities, on Sunday detained a water tanker driver and seized his truck for allegedly filling the tanker with contaminated water unfit for human consumption.

In a statement sent to The Jordan Times, the ministry said it detained the driver and sent him to the police department office in Bayader Wadi Seer, in cooperation with the Royal Department for Environment Protection, and referred the case to the judiciary.

The statement said that a taskforce comprising security and technical members from the Water Ministry, the Water Authority of Jordan (WAJ) and the Rangers conducted a campaign in the Wadi Seer area, inspecting several water tankers, one of which appeared to be filled with contaminated water.

The ministry said that the campaign was part of its efforts to ensure the supply of quality drinking water that does not endanger the public.

The statement also commended the efforts of the WAJ and the Rangers and the “fruitful” cooperation that aims at prosecuting those who sell drinking water that violates Jordanian standards.

The ministry urged the public to contact the unified complaints number (117116) to report any cases, assuring that there will be “no leniency” in dealing with violations that endanger the quality of water.
