Current escalation in violence result of continued Israeli violations, says Kanaan

AMMAN — The ongoing events in occupied Palestine are a direct result of Israel's apartheid policies, notably the actions and "stubbornness" of the right-wing Israeli government, which permits settlers to violate the sanctity of Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, especially the Al Aqsa Mosque, Secretary General of the Royal Committee for Jerusalem Affairs Abdullah Kanaan said on Saturday.

Kanaan stressed that Israel's persistent policy of deprivation, killings, imprisonment and besieging the Palestinians, as a form of collective punishment for their demand for self-determination, will only result in further destruction in the region, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Regional stability and peace can only be achieved through Israel's adherence to international legitimacy resolutions and the two-state solution, which includes recognising the right of the Palestinians to establish their own independent state with Jerusalem as its capital, he said.

Kanaan pointed out that one of the main reasons for the current events is the existence of thousands of prisoners, including women, the elderly and children, in Israeli occupation prisons and detention centres.

Under the Hashemite Custodianship over Jerusalem's Islamic and Christian holy sites, Jordan will continue to be a shield and source of support for the legitimate resilience and struggle of the Palestinians, he stressed.
