A crime occurs in Jordan nearly every 20 minutes — PSD

AMMAN — A crime occurs in Jordan approximately every 20 minutes, the Public Security Department (PSD) has said.
In its annual report, the PSD stated that every 21 minutes and 41 seconds a crime takes place in the Kingdom, while every one hour and eight minutes a criminal offence is committed and a misdemeanour occurs every 31 minutes and 40 seconds.
The report said there were 75 premeditated murders in 2015, in comparison to 80 the previous year, which represented a 6.25 per cent drop. Manslaughter also dropped by around 15 per cent. In 2015, there were 76 reported manslaughter cases while in 2014 it was 90 cases.
Attempted murder cases also dropped in 2015 in comparison to 2014, according to the report. A total of 464 persons attempted to kill others in 2015, compared with 565 in the previous year.
Aggravated assault also saw a decrease in reported cases last year, according to the PSD report. In 2015, there were 988 cases in comparison with 1,086 in 2014.
Rape cases, meanwhile, dropped by around 12 per cent. In 2015, there were 122 cases and in 2014, the number was 140, while molestation cases witnessed a slight decrease, according to the report, which listed 752 cases in 2015 in comparison with 766 cases in 2014.
Misdemeanour thefts went down to 7,217 cases last year, from 7,497 recorded in 2014.
In the same time span, fraud cases increased by around 8 per cent in 2015, the report said. There were 2,254 cases in 2015 in comparison with 2,072 in 2014.
Suicide rates also increased by 13 per cent, the report maintained, saying in 2015 there were 113 cases and in 2014 the number was 100.
Kidnapping also witnessed around 5 per cent increase, the report stated. In 2015, there were 190 cases compared to 181 cases in the previous year.
There were 71 prostitution cases in 2015, according to the report. In 2014, the prostitution case count was 67.
