Percentage of crimes committed by students dropped in 2013 — report

AMMAN — The number of premeditated murders committed by students witnessed a sharp drop in 2013 compared with the previous year, according to official statistics.
Students committed nine premeditated murders last year, while the figure stood at 18 in 2012, according to figures recently released by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) that is affiliated with the Public Security Department.
Murder cases dropped by 40 per cent as well, the report said, citing nine cases in 2013 compared to 15 in 2012.
Rape also dropped by 28.5 per cent in 2013, according to the CID report.
“There were five cases of rape in 2013 in comparison with seven the previous year.”
Another criminal offence involving students that witnessed a drop was drug trafficking, which fell by 33.33 per cent, with 18 cases reported in 2012, compared with 12 in 2013, the CID report indicated.
But several other offences witnessed a high increase, with bribery cases rising by 550 per cent, from two cases in 2012 to 13 the following year.
Forgery also increased by 46.6 per cent, while aggravated assault among students saw a 7.2 per rise with 146 cases reported in 2013 compared to 136 the previous year, the report stated.
Meanwhile, the report listed several statistics related to crimes in Jordan in general, including premeditated murder, which dropped by 9.7 per cent, from 82 cases in 2012, to 74 last year, according to the report.
However manslaughter and accidental deaths increased by 41.6 per cent in 2013.
