AMMAN  — A cold air mass accompanied by a depression will begin to pass through the Kingdom today, the Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD) said on Wednesday.

A drop in temperatures is expected with partly-cloudy to cloudy skies, the statement said.

The whole country is likely to see rain, with heavy rainfall expected over the northern region accompanied by thunderstorms and hail, the statement added. Strong south-westerly winds are expected with gusts in desert areas.

The JMD added that areas 1,100 metres above sea level may also see snow early Friday morning.

Temperatures are likely to drop further on Friday and skies will remain cloudy throughout the day, according to the JMD. Rain is also likely to be heavy over the northern, central and western regions at times, with moderate to strong south-westerly winds.

The Civil Defense Department (CDD) issued a warning on Wednesday for the public to stay away from valleys and low-lying areas and relocate to higher ground to avoid being in the path of flashfloods.

The CDD also recommended that people avoid driving vehicles during low visibility, especially on the Desert Highway.
