AMMAN — The Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) on Wednesday began operating the traffic lights in west Amman’s 8th Circle.
Yaser Atiyat, GAM’s deputy city director of public works, said the traffic lights will be under observation for one week.
“We will keep receiving feedback from the public and keep a close eye on the timing of each traffic light in order to observe the flow of traffic and see if any changes are required,” he told The Jordan Times over the phone.
Atiyat noted that each traffic light at the 8th Circle has a different timing according to the route and the number of cars that pass on that route.
“We are also going to study peak hour traffic,” he said, adding that 6,000 cars pass by the 8th Circle per hour.
The municipality has designated areas for pedestrians and people with disabilities at the intersection, according to the GAM official.
“We also set up signs to direct people. We call on motorists to follow them.”
Acknowledging that traffic lights are not “a magical solution”, Atiyat said they are a means to alleviate vehicle movement in the area.
“I am sure that things will get better after the completion of the Sinaa Intersection project in the industrial area near west Amman’s Bayader neighbourhood,” he added.
GAM will be studying new options to implement at the 8th Circle, including a tunnel, to further improve traffic movement, Atiyat noted.
