2 handed lenghty jail terms, JD1b in fine for fraud, abuse of authority

AMMAN — The seventh judicial commission at the Amman Criminal Court on Tuesday sentenced two men to prison terms ranging from six to 22-and-a-half years with temporary hard labour and imposed a penalty of more than JD1 billion to be paid to the Treasury after convicting them of fraud and abuse of function.

The convicted persons are a board member and a chairman of the board of directors of a public shareholding company, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. 

During a public trial, the commission issued its appealable ruling before the court. 

The case, dating back to 2018, included 14 Public Prosecution witnesses.  

The court decided to sentence the chairman of the company’s board of directors to 22-and-a-half years with temporary hard labour and fined him a total of JD542,243,163.

As for the member of the board, he was sentenced to six years in prison with temporary hard labour, and fined him a total of JD74,286,610.

The court also imposed a fine on the first convict amounting to JD459,828,920 obtained through abuse of function, and JD8,127,633 obtained through embezzlement. 

A total amount of JD74,286,610 was imposed on both convicts for joint abuse of function. 

The first convict was incriminated with abuse of function repeated 46 times as well as embezzlement, while both convicts were charged with abuse of function repeated twice.
