West Ham pile more pressure on Ten Hag, Palmer fires Chelsea to victory

LONDON — West Ham piled more pressure on beleaguered Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag with a dramatic 2-1 win on Sunday as Cole Palmer inspired Chelsea to a victory by the same scoreline over Newcastle.

Tottenham were beaten 1-0 at Crystal Palace, who picked up their first win of the season.

Liverpool can go back to the top of the table with victory away at Arsenal in the biggest clash of the Premier League weekend later on Sunday.

Ten Hag was left to rue a familiar lack of ruthlessness as United's fourth league defeat in nine games will spark further speculation on how long he will be given to turn the Red Devils' fortunes around.

The visitors should have been out of sight by half-time at the London Stadium.

Alejandro Garnacho hit the woodwork inside two minutes and Edson Alvarez also headed off his own crossbar.

But it was Diogo Dalot who missed the biggest chance when the Portuguese international somehow fired over with the goal gaping after rounding Lukasz Fabianski.

Under-fire West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui showed his disgust with the Hammers' first-half display by making three substitutions at the break.

Crysencio Summerville was one of those introduced and he slid in to open the scoring against the run of play on 74 minutes.

Casemiro brought United level nine minutes from time with a header from point-blank range.

But there was late drama when VAR intervened for a foul on Danny Ings by Matthijs de Ligt.

Jarrod Bowen smashed in the resulting spot-kick to take West Ham above United, who sink to 14th in the table.

Chelsea had been beaten in the Premier League for the first time since Enzo Maresca's first match in charge at Liverpool last weekend despite an impressive performance.

The Blues got back to winning ways with Palmer at the heart of their best work.

The England international had a goal marginally ruled out for offside inside the first five minutes.

Palmer was the creator for the opening goal, despite not being credited with the assist, as his sumptuous ball over the top freed Pedro Neto, who picked out Nicolas Jackson to slot in his sixth goal of the season.

Newcastle are now winless in five league games as the pressure mounts on Eddie Howe ahead of a rematch against Chelsea in the League Cup on Wednesday.

The Magpies did get back on level terms before half-time as Alexander Isak tapped in Lewis Hall's cross at the end of a well-worked move.

Palmer took just two minutes into the second period to make the decisive impact with a driving run forward and powerful finish that beat Nick Pope at his near post.

Newcastle should have left London with a point, though, as Isak botched a huge chance to level 15 minutes from time after rounding Robert Sanchez.

Palace began the day in the relegation zone but were good value for the three points at Selhurst Park as Tottenham's struggles on the road continue.

Eberechi Eze's deft flick teed up Jean-Philippe Mateta to fire home the only goal.

Eze had a second ruled out for offside in the second half, but Tottenham, without injured captain Son Heung-min, were toothless in attack.

Spurs have won just once in five away league games this season as they slip to eighth, four points off the top four.

AMMAN — Jordan is now the 9th ranked Asian team in FIFA rankings as they steadily make their way to possible World Cup qualification as team star Yazan Nue’imat is in contention for Asia’s best player award which will be announced by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) in Seoul Tuesday.

The team moved four spots to 64th in the latest World rankings issued on the weekend - the biggest Asian climber this month. They shot up 17 spots to 70th in February after reaching the Asian Cup finals and have steadily been improving  after they dropped to 87th in 2023.

Argentina, France, Spain, England, Brazil make up the top five.  Top 10 Arab teams are: Morocco 13, Egypt 30, Algeria  37, Tunisia 47, Qatar 46, Iraq 56, Saudi Arabia 59, Jordan 64, UAE 68, Bahrain 76. Top 10 Asian teams are: Japan 15, Iran 19, Korea 22, Australia 24, Qatar 46, Iraq 56, Uzbekistan 58, Saudi Arabia 59, Jordan 64, UAE 68.

In latest Round 3/ Group B qualifying matches for the 2026 World Cup, Jordan lost 2-0 to South Korea and beat Oman 4-0 after earlier beating Palestine 3-1 and holding Kuwait 1-1.  The Kingdom will face Iraq and Kuwait in November in their third stage matches.

Jordan’s coach Jamal Sellami said the team will hopefully be in best form ahead of the next two away qualifiers. “We hopestrikers Mousa Ta’mari and Yazan Nue’imat will be fully ready, they are key players and as long as the squad is in top form we do not fear any match.”

The team will next regroup as of November 11 to play Iraq on November 14 and Kuwait on November 19.

Leipzig beat Freiburg to go top, Dortmund lose away again

LEIPZIG, Germany — RB Leipzig came from behind to beat Freiburg 3-1 at home on Saturday to leapfrog Bayern Munich and go top of the Bundesliga, while Borussia Dortmund’s away woes continued with another defeat.

Freiburg, impressive this season under new coach Julian Schuster, scored first when Japan winger Ritsu Doan was in the perfect place to head in a Vincenzo Grifo cross.

Leipzig, who looked heavy-legged after a 1-0 home defeat to Liverpool in the Champions League on Wednesday, were a goal down at half-time but equalised shortly after.

Germany defender Benjamin Henrichs, who was at fault for Freiburg’s opener, cut a dangerous cross goalwards for captain Willi Orban to divert into the net.

Lutsharel Geertruida put Leipzig in front after 58 minutes when he finished off a lightning-fast counter attack for his first Bundesliga goal.

Lois Openda put the home side in full control with 11 minutes remaining, again on the break — his fifth goal in eight games this season.

Leipzig are now three points clear of Bayern, who play at last-placed Bochum on Sunday.

Orban said Leipzig “took a while to get our motor running”, adding “we could still feel the [Liverpool] game in our bones”.

‘Hard to get a win’

Just days after letting a 2-0 lead slip to lose 5-2 at Real Madrid in a rematch of last season’s Champions League final, Dortmund’s poor week continued with a 2-1 defeat at Augsburg despite going ahead early.

As he did against Real, Dortmund winger Donyell Malen gave his side the lead, blasting an excellent Serhou Guirassy assist into the net after four minutes.

Augsburg were level after 25 minutes however, Alexis Claude-Maurice taking advantage of some lazy defending to waltz through the centre of the park and hit a low shot into the corner.

Claude-Maurice scored five minutes into the second half, this time capitalising on an Emre Can error to slide the ball into the right-hand corner.

A frustrated Dortmund coach Nuri Sahin told Sky: “The goals we conceded, just insane, and now we are leaving empty handed again.

“It’s too easy to score goals against us. When you concede two goals a game it’s going to be hard to get a win.”

Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl said the club had “full trust, no question” in Sahin, adding “we’re not where we want to be yet but we’ve said again and again we need time”.

The loss leaves Dortmund seven points off top spot after just eight matches and last season’s Champions League finalists have not won away from home in the league since April.

Elsewhere, Stuttgart won 2-1 at home against promoted Holstein Kiel.

Captain Deniz Undav opened the scoring 19 minutes in and El Bilal Toure, who scored a stoppage-time winner against Juventus midweek, added a stunner in the second half.

Jeff Chabot’s second yellow meant Stuttgart were reduced to 10 men and Armin Gigovic cut the lead with six minutes remaining but Kiel, who lost Jann-Fiete Arp to a second yellow late, could not cut the gap further.

In Hamburg, promoted St Pauli picked up a valuable point in a scoreless draw at home against Wolfsburg.

Later on Saturday, defending champions Bayer Leverkusen play away at Werder Bremen.

Jordan plays N. Korea in U-17 Asian Cup qualifiers

AMMAN  —  Jordan plays North Korea on Friday in its third match in Group A U17 Asian Cup qualifiers currently under way in Amman.

Jordan lost its easiest two encounters ahead of playing North Korea on October 25 and Iran on October 27.  Jordan went down in the first match 3-1 to Syria, and squandered the chance to possibly qualify from the group as second best after surprisingly losing to Hong Kong 2-1.

Observers expected Jordan to easily beat Hong Kong which had lost 8-2 to North Korea and 7-1 to Iran. However, Jordan’s result paved the way for Iran to likely advance as second best with two matches left. Before qualifiers conclude, North Korea took the lead atop the standings and clinched the qualifying spot from Group A, after it beat Syria 2-1 and Iran 4-1.

A total of 43 teams are playing in 10 groups with the group leaders as well as 5 second placed teams advancing to the April 3-20, 2025 finals in Saudi Arabia. In 2022, Jordan hosted Group A qualifiers for the U-17 Asian Cup but failed to advance.  The team also could not retain their West Asian Championship title and exited Round  1.

In other age group divisions, Jordan qualified to the U-20 Asian Cup scheduled for China in February 2025 - a qualifying tournament to the U-20 World Cup. Jordan advanced to the finals for the 9th time and hopes to repeat 2006 feat, when it finished fourth in the U-20 Asian Cup  and qualified to the U-20 World Cup in 2007.

Goliath vs Goliath: Yankees, Dodgers clash in World Series classic

By - Oct 24,2024 - Last updated at Oct 24,2024

LOS ANGELES, United States — The two biggest teams from America's two biggest cities, led by baseball's two biggest superstars. East Coast vs West Coast. Broadway vs Hollywood. Goliath vs Goliath.

The most eagerly anticipated World Series showdown in decades gets under way on Friday when the Los Angeles Dodgers take on the New York Yankees in what promises to be a baseball blockbuster for the ages.

Forty-three years after their 11th and most recent meeting in a World Series, the historic rivals will face off once more at Dodger Stadium for game one of the best-of-seven championship series.

"This is what the baseball world wanted," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. "It's going to be a great World Series."

Any World Series meeting between the two teams who were New York City rivals before the Dodgers left Brooklyn for California in 1957 would be a must-see event in its own right.

But hype surrounding this year's collision between the two baseball juggernauts -- the first time they have met in a World Series since 1981 -- has soared into a different stratosphere, thanks largely to the star-studded nature of the two teams' rosters.

The Dodgers boast the talismanic Japanese superstar Shohei Ohtani, the record-breaking generational talent widely seen as the greatest all-round player since Babe Ruth.

The Yankees are led by the big-hitting Aaron Judge, the former American League Most Valuable Player who blasted an astonishing 62 home runs in the 2022 season.

Yet while Ohtani and Judge are the headline acts, the supporting cast is equally gaudy.

The Dodgers have former MVPs in Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman; the Yankees have Giancarlo Stanton, the 2017 National League MVP and five-time All-Star, along with the likes of the gifted outfielder Juan Soto and Cy Young award-winning pitcher Gerrit Cole.

'World Series of superstars'

"As a fan of baseball, how can you not be excited about this?" Dodgers infielder Max Muncy asked this week. "You're talking about two of the biggest franchises. The biggest stars in the sport. We got Shohei, Freddie and Mookie. On the other side, they've got Aaron Judge, Giancarlo, Juan Soto, Gerrit Cole."

It's the kind of dazzling star power capable of eclipsing the bright lights of Broadway or Hollywood Boulevard.

And it's the kind of box office appeal that has Major League Baseball's bean-counters rubbing their hands in delight after years of steadily declining audience numbers.

So far this postseason, average television viewing figures have leapt 18% from last year's average of 2.82 million per game to 3.33 million.

While this year's World Series is unlikely to match the record average of viewers for a Fall Classic -- 44.3 million tuned in for each game of the 1978 series -- it is likely to obliterate the record-low 9.08 million who watched last year's series between the Texas Rangers and Arizona Diamondbacks.

The presence of Dodgers ace Ohtani has also opened up a new international frontier, with Major League Baseball revealing that a record 12.9 million Japanese viewers tuned in for the Dodgers' recent National League Division Series decider against the San Diego Padres -- roughly 10 per cent of Japan's entire population.

"That's an unbelievable number, a huge audience," MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said. "Ohtani has really, really driven interest in the game internationally."

Manfred believes this year's World Series evokes baseball's golden age, when the sport was truly America's pastime and had yet to be usurped by the NFL and NBA.

"The history of Yankee-Dodgers is great for our fanbase," Manfred said.

"You look back and think of Sandy Koufax playing against Mickey Mantle, of Joe DiMaggio playing against Jackie Robinson. And now you've got Aaron Judge against Shohei Ohtani."

Unsurprisingly, World Series tickets have become the hottest commodity in sport since the Dodgers confirmed their place in the championship finale with victory over the New York Mets on Sunday.

According to ticket aggregator TicketIQ, games in Los Angeles are averaging around $3,100 on secondary markets; games in New York come in at an eye-watering average of $4,875.

"Everybody wants to see these two teams play on the biggest stages" Dodgers shortstop Tommy Edman said this week. "It's a World Series full of superstars."

The top-seeded Dodgers will have home advantage through the series, and will look to starting pitcher Jack Flaherty to get them off the mark in Friday's opener.

The Yankees will start Cole on the mound as they aim to spoil the Dodgers' party before the series heads back to New York for game three next Monday.

"I'm looking forward to it," Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. "This is Dodgers-Yankees. Lakers-Celtics, however you want to say it. It certainly has that feel to it.

"The stars will be out, the eyeballs will be watching, and hopefully we can deliver a great series."

AMMAN — In an important match at Amman International Stadium, Hussein Irbid secured a 2-1 victory against Uzbekistan's Nasaf on Wednesday in the AFC Champions League Two, group stage.

Striker Aref Haj made a significant impact after coming off the bench in the 69th minute, scoring a brace with his first goal in the 87th minute and another one  in stoppage time. Nassaf managed to pull one back in stoppage time (90+5) through Da Silva before the final whistle.

LeBron, Bronny James make NBA history with father-son appearance

LOS ANGELES, United States — LeBron and Bronny James made NBA history on Tuesday, becoming the first father and son to play alongside each other in a regular season fixture as the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves 110-103.
The duo, who played together briefly in a pre-season game earlier this month, took to the court late in the second quarter at the Crypto.com Arena with the Lakers leading 51-35.

An enormous roar went up from the home crowd as the James duo approached the scorers table to check into the game after the Lakers had surged into a double-digit lead.

As James and his son prepared to enter the court, James Sr. could be heard telling Bronny: "You ready? You see the intensity, right? Just play carefree though."
In a perfectly scripted moment that was pure Hollywood, the James' double-act was watched at courtside by Ken Griffey Sr. and Ken Griffey Jr, who made baseball history playing for the Seattle Mariners as father and son in 1990-1991.

"That moment -- us checking in together -- is something I'll never forget, no matter how old I get, how my memory may fade as I get older or whatever. I will never forget that moment," said LeBron, who had started Tuesday by celebrating the 10th birthday of his daughter Zhuri Nova.

"Everything was just great today, everything -- from the moment I woke up," he added.
"Obviously this is the first time in this beautiful history of the NBA that a father and son have been on the same floor, let alone on the same team. It was pretty cool."
Bronny's debut for the Lakers was subdued. The 20-year-old spent 2min 41sec on court, taking two unsuccessful shots from the field before being replaced.
He expressed gratitude for the supportive "energy" shown by Lakers fans.
"I try not to focus on everything that's going on around me. I was trying to focus on trying not to mess up. But I totally did feel the energy," Bronny said.
Lakers officials had been coy before Tuesday's season-opener about where and when LeBron and Bronny would play their first regular season fixture together.
However, NBA superstar LeBron, who turns 40 in December, admitted in pre-game remarks that he could scarcely contain his excitement at the prospect of realising his long-cherished dream of sharing a court with his son.

"Just to run out the tunnel knowing that he'll be in uniform, run out the tunnel with him, see him warm up, and be out there with the rest of my teammates," he told reporters during a morning shoot-around on Tuesday.
Anticipation about the James double-act has dominated the Lakers' preparations for the new season since Bronny was selected by the franchise with the 55th pick in the draft in June.

'It's been a treat'

Bronny is expected to spend most of his rookie season in the developmental G-League rather than the Lakers senior squad.

LeBron however said Tuesday that he had relished being able to accompany his son on his first steps into professional basketball.
"It's been a treat and just in preseason, the practices, just every day," the older James said. "The plane rides, the bus rides of being with him and showing him the ropes, along with his teammates and coaches. Just what this professional life is all about and how to prepare every day... super-duper cool."

Bronny's ascent to the ranks of the NBA has been made all the more remarkable given that just over a year ago he suffered a cardiac arrest during a workout with his University of Southern California college team-mates.
James Sr. said his son's swift recovery from that life-threatening episode had convinced him that he would one day play in the NBA.
"To see him play in a college Division I game the same year he had heart surgery... I knew that at that moment that there really was going to be nothing to stop him from anything that he wants to do," LeBron said.

Tagovailoa returns to NFL practice Wednesday after concussion

MIAMI — Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa returns to practice on Wednesday for the first time since suffering a concussion last month and could play this weekend, Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said on Monday.

Tagovailoa, who has a history of concussions raising concern over his health, must still clear the NFL’s concussion protocol to be able to take the field against Arizona on Sunday.

“Our plan is to start him practicing on Wednesday,” McDaniel said.

“The clearing doesn’t come until after some of the activity, but we’re doing so in the hope of everything going well so he can play on Sunday, but that’s to be determined.”

Tagovailoa, who signed a four-year deal worth $212.4 million last July, suffered a concussion in a loss to Buffalo on September 12 and was later placed on injured reserve after a third diagnosed concussion in two years.

“I’ve been symptom-free from the next day after the game,” Tagovailoa said.

Many called for Tagovailoa to retire after so many head injuries, but the 26-year-old Hawaiian said, “I wasn’t paying attention to any of it.”

“Had some conversations with my wife but that was it.”

Asked what he would say to those concerned for his health, Tagovailoa said, “I appreciate your concern. I really do. I love this game and I love it to the death of me.”

Doctors have told him the long-term risks of so many concussions but Tagovailoa refuses to give up the sport he loves.

“There’s a gray area when it comes to that, if you’re going to get long-term disease or are not,” he said. “This is what makes me happy and I’m going to do it. That’s it.

“Every time we all suit up, we’re all taking a risk we could potentially get hurt... I’m willing to play the odds. That’s it.”

Tagovailoa indicated he would remain a run and pass threat, the latest injury not changing how he plays.

“I’ve just got to be smart,” said Tagovailoa. “Got to stay more available for the team, for the organisation, for my guys.”

The Dolphins, who have not scored more than 20 points in a game all season, have lost three of four games since Tagovailoa’s concussion, falling to 2-4 on the campaign.

“The reason he’s coming back now is because the medical experts have deemed it safe for him to return,” McDaniel said. “I don’t mess with timelines or try to overcook or forecast. You lean on experts on matters of the career and that’s what we’re doing here.”

Tagovailoa suffered two diagnosed concussions in the 2022 campaign and was controversially kept in another contest that led to changes in NFL concussion protocol.

“What I know is the team did what’s in best in the interests of me,” he said of his latest benching.

“Given what the doctors have told me, having a substantial amount of time to rest and recover, they did what was best, protecting myself from myself.”

NFL players this season have been allowed to wear Guardian Cap helmets this season in a bid to prevent head injuries, but Tagovailoa said he would not adopt the larger headgear.

“Personal choice”, Tagovailoa said.

The Dolphins hope to make a turnaround with Tagovailoa back in the lineup, but he isn’t seeing himself in a season savior role.

“I don’t put any pressure on myself coming back and having to save the team,” Tagovailoa said.

Tagovailoa said it has been “frustrating” being stuck on the sidelines but he has attended team meetings and tried to be a leader off the field as needed.

“It has been a different type of way of leading,” he said.

AMMAN — Wihdat and Hussein resume Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Asian Champions League Two Round 3 matches as of Tuesday as standings begin to take shape in the 21st edition of the competition.

Aiming to retain their Group C lead, Wihdat will play an away game against Tajikistan’s Istiklol on Tuesday. So far, Wihdat were held 2-2 with UAE’s Sharjah after they scored  a vital 2-1 win over Iran’s Sepahan Isfahan. In other group matches, Sepahan beat Istiklol 4-0 after Sharjah beat Istiklol 1-0.

On the other hand, compatriots Hussein might have a tougher task as they host Uzbekistan’s Nasaf Qarshi on Wednesday as they moved to third in Group D following a 2-1 win over Kuwait Club after falling 3-1 to UAE’s Ahli Dubai. In other matches, Nasaf beat Ahli 2-1, and Kuwait held Nasaf 0-0.

Clubs are playing in 8 groups with the top two in each group moving to the quarters of the second tier Asian event that has replaced the AFC Cup. The top tier Asian clubs competition is now branded Asian Champions League Elite.
