Crown Prince, in phone call with education minister, inquires about student Humaidi's case

By - Mar 06,2025 - Last updated at Mar 06,2025

AMMAN — HRH Crown Prince Hussein made a phone call on Wednesday with Minister of Education Azmi Mahafzah to inquire about the case of student Mohammad Humaidi, who is recovering from burns he sustained inside one of the public schools.

During the call, His Royal Highness expressed his confidence in the fair and impartial judiciary, which is handling the case, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The Crown Prince also directed that the ministry take the necessary measures to ensure that such incidents do not occur again and to provide a safe educational environment for students, Petra said.

He also emphasised that he would continue to follow up on the measures the ministry will take to enhance public safety at schools.

In remarks to Petra on Wednesday, Mahafzah said that the incident of the student burned by his peers in one of the schools is "strange and reprehensible and it has never occurred in the history of our Jordanian schools."

The minister emphasized that the incident reflects negligence on the part of some school staff, as such dangerous materials should not be within the students' reach. "They must be stored in a safe place in closed rooms, and it is unacceptable for students to be in such a room."

"The ministry will not hesitate to take any decisions or impose penalties on those found guilty of negligence or failure to act, which led to this painful incident," he said.

Police on Tuesday said they were questioning two minors who reportedly set a student on fire in one of the Kingdom’s schools a day earlier.

The two suspects allegedly poured a flammable substance on his stomach and chest and set it ablaze, the police spokesperson said.

“The child, who survived the incident and was listed in fair condition, appeared in a video clip on social media describing the alleged incident,” the police spokesperson told The Jordan Times.

The Family Protection Department (FPD) is currently investigating the incident, according to the police official.

In a video clip that circulated on social media, a boy named Mohammed, 11, spoke from a hospital bed of the alleged incident saying he was “attacked by two of his schoolmates who poured kerosene over his body and set him ablaze”.

A woman claiming to be his mother also appeared in the video claiming that two students attacked her son and called on the concerned authorities “to bring justice to my son”.

The juvenile prosecution office is expected to start investigating the incident once the FPD finishes its initial investigations, according to a statement by the Public Security Directorate.

AMMAN — As part of Jordan's ongoing efforts to alleviate the severe humanitarian crisis caused by the Israeli war on Gaza, the Jordanian Field Hospital in South Gaza has been providing critical medical and therapeutic services to the people of Khan Yunis.

Since its establishment, the hospital has treated 26,361 patients and performed 937 surgeries, according to its operational commander. "In line with the Royal directives to stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people, we continue to provide the best medical care to help them overcome the challenges imposed by war," the commander said.

The hospital's director highlighted that of the total surgeries performed, 190 were major and 747 were minor. Additionally, the hospital facilitated 44 births and treated 432 patients who required admission to various departments for specialised care, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

A key focus of the hospital’s work has been its Amputee Support Unit, which has provided prosthetic limbs to those who have lost their limbs due to the ongoing violence.

"To date, 116 prosthetic limbs have been fitted, benefiting 369 individuals."

Under Royal directives, the Kingdom, in cooperation with the World Central Kitchen, has also dispatched a mobile bakery with a production capacity of 3,500 loaves of bread per hour to Gaza.

Jordan runs two military field hospitals in Gaza, one in the Strip's north, which was established in 2009 following the war in 2008.

The second was established in Khan Younis in the south in November 2023 at the peak of the Israeli war of aggression on the coastal enclave that erupted on October 7, 2023.

Besides the field hospitals in Gaza, the Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army (JAF) established the Jordanian field hospital in Nablus in late November 2023 and has conducted over 900 surgeries and received more than 83,000 patients ever since.

Sael, one of the beneficiaries of the Royal Initiative to treat 2,000 children from Gaza through the Jordan Medical Corridor, expresses his joy when his family received a phone call offering treatment in Jordan (Petra photo)

AMMAN — Ten-year-old Sael Arafat never imagined that a simple trip to buy coffee for his family would lead him to unknowingly purchase the world's most expensive coffee, a cost that will follow him for the rest of his life.

Speaking to the Jordan News Agency, Petra, Sael recounted how he was injured by shrapnel from an explosion on his way to buy coffee, resulting in the amputation of his right leg.

Sael, one of the beneficiaries of the Royal Initiative to treat 2,000 children from Gaza through the Jordan Medical Corridor, expressed his joy when his family received a phone call offering treatment in Jordan.

"I was overjoyed when we received the call for treatment in Jordan for a prosthetic limb that will allow me to walk again and enjoy my childhood," said Sael.

His father, Arafat Satari, expressed deep gratitude to His Majesty King Abdullah for this gesture, stressing that this is not the first time the King has extended his support to the Palestinian people.

Meanwhile, Sidra Bardini's mother shared her heartbreaking story, explaining that her daughter had lost one of her hands and they had almost resigned themselves to the fact that she would live her life with one hand. "But by God's will, my daughter will now have a new hand through this Royal initiative, which will provide her with a prosthesis that will help her for the rest of her life," her mother added.

Mohammad Adnan Amwas expressed a similar sense of hope, despite the pain and destruction they have endured.

"Even though we've suffered a lot, we feel hopeful when we see the efforts of Jordan and the Jordanian armed forces who came to the remotest parts of Gaza to bring our children to safety and distribute them to Jordanian hospitals for treatment, easing their pain," he said, expressing joy that his son Bilal, who was injured in his left eye, benefited from the Royal treatment initiative at the Royal Medical Services.

Marium Najjar's mother spoke of how the Jordanian Royal initiative had restored her hope. Marium had long suffered from seizures and fainting spells, exacerbated by the difficulty of accessing medical care in Gaza, especially with the destruction of hospitals by the occupation forces. "The Royal initiative has given us new hope for our daughter's treatment in Jordanian hospitals," she said.

In a humanitarian milestone, the Jordan Armed Forces and the Ministry of Health received on Monday evening the first batch of 26 children who crossed the King Hussein Bridge for treatment in Jordanian hospitals, in accordance with Royal directives.

Upon arrival, the Ministry of Health immediately provided the children with the national immunisation programme before transferring them to hospitals for further treatment.

This initiative aims to treat 2,000 children from Gaza in Jordanian hospitals, who will be returned to Gaza upon completion of their treatment.

International organisations have expressed their willingness to support this humanitarian effort, recognising Jordan's continued commitment to helping those in need.

Cassation Court upholds over 3-year sentence for drug dealer

By - Mar 05,2025 - Last updated at Mar 05,2025

AMMAN — The Court of Cassation has upheld a June 2023 State Security Court (SSC) ruling, sentencing a man to over three years in prison after convicting him of selling marijuana to an undercover agent in Ajloun governorate in December 2022.

The court declared the defendant guilty of obtaining illegal narcotics with the intent of selling the drugs to an undercover agent in Anjara town on December 25.

The SSC handed the defendant five years in prison for the offence of possessing illegal narcotics and ordered him to pay JD5,000 in fines.

However, the court decided to reduce the fine to JD3,500 and the prison term to three years and four months in prison to give the defendant a second chance in life.

Court documents said the Anti-Narcotics Department (AND) learnt the defendant was in possession of illegal narcotics and sent one of its agents to pose as a buyer.

“The AND agent got in touch with the defendant and asked him for a small stash of marijuana in return for JD20,” court documents said.

When the two met, AND agents immediately arrested the suspect, court papers added.

Upon searching his home, the court maintained, law-enforcement officers found additional amounts of illicit drugs including Captagon pills, Hashish and Crystal meth.

The defendant contested the SSC’s ruling through his lawyer, who argued that the court “did not provide solid evidence to implicate his client”.

The lawyer argued that his client deserves clemency “since he does not have any previous criminal record”.

Meanwhile, the SSC prosecution office asked the higher court to uphold the sentence and the fine imposed on the defendant.

The higher court maintained that the SSC had followed the proper procedures in issuing the sentence against the defendant.

“It was clear to the court that the defendant confessed willingly to possessing the illegal drugs to sell in the local market,” the higher court said.

The Court of Cassation judges were Yassin Abdullat, Nayef Samarat, Mohammad Khashashneh, Qassem Dughmi and Hammad Ghzawi.

AMMAN — Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Saleh Kharabsheh on Wednesday signed a memorandum of cooperation with General Manager of Harmony Investments Company (HINCO) Khalil Abu Rub to enhance collaboration in geological studies and mineral resource exploration.

Kharabsheh highlighted that the memorandum builds upon ongoing geological survey efforts in Jordan, aiming to develop a precise mineral map using drone technology, a globally adopted advanced method.

He highlighted the ministry’s commitment to obtaining reliable data to identify mineral resource locations and assess untapped reserves, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The minister stated that negotiations are underway with four companies to finalise executive agreements, expressing optimism about achieving tangible results in the near future.

Abu Rub said that HINCO employs "cutting-edge" technology in exploration activities to determine the quantity and depth of mineral deposits in targeted areas, as well as to identify new sites.

He explained that aerial surveys conducted by the company are followed by comprehensive field studies, which include sample collection and detailed analyses by technical teams.

Director of the Geology and Mining Directorate Hisham Zayoud said that the memorandum encompasses geological surveying and mineral exploration using the latest technologies, with a particular focus on developing strategies to optimise the Kingdom’s natural resource utilisation.
