AMMAN — His Majesty King Abdullah on Thursday urged the international community to take immediate action to stop the humanitarian tragedy in Gaza.

During a joint press conference with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz following talks in Berlin, His Majesty stressed that Israel’s war on Gaza must stop, the ceasefire must be reinstated, and the flow of humanitarian aid must resume, according to a Royal Court statement.

The King said Jordan is doing everything in its power to help alleviate the critical humanitarian situation in Gaza by providing aid through all possible means, commending Germany’s support to humanitarian efforts in the Strip.

His Majesty reiterated the need for the international community to take action to stop the dangerous escalation in the West Bank, where tens of thousands of Palestinians have been displaced from their homes and villages, noting that the displacement of Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza threatens to plunge the entire region into further instability, the statement said.

The King also warned of the dangers of continued violations of Muslim and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, which fuel further tensions and undermine any chance for peace.

His Majesty underscored that the only way forward is through a political solution on the basis of the two-state solution that ensures peace and security for Palestinians, Israelis and the entire region. The King praised Germany’s support for the two-state solution and its positive response to the Arab plan for the reconstruction of Gaza, according to the statement.

His Majesty also stressed the importance of working to stabilise the region, including supporting Syria and its efforts to preserve its security, stability and territorial integrity, noting that Jordan looks forward to seeing a stable and secure Syria again, where refugees can return safely to contribute to rebuilding their country.

On bilateral relations, His Majesty noted the fruitful discussions with the German chancellor on ways to take the strong partnership between Jordan and Germany to greater heights.

The King spoke about the highlights of his visit to Berlin, which included his address at the opening of the 2025 Global Disability Summit that was co-hosted by Jordan and Germany, reflecting their shared commitment to promoting the rights of persons with disabilities, in addition to meetings with representatives of German companies and economic institutions, which provided opportunities to identify potential areas of cooperation, such as in industry, trade, technology and energy.

His Majesty praised Germany’s support to Jordan in the technical education, vocational training, and public sector modernisation, as well as providing support to Syrian refugees in Jordan over the past decade, highlighting Jordan’s keenness to continue this strong partnership and joint efforts towards peace and stability in the region, the statement said.

The King thanked Chancellor Scholz, who is nearing the end of his term, for his friendship with Jordan and his efforts to advance peace and stability in the Middle East.

In response to a question on Jordanian-European relations and joint efforts to deal with regional developments, His Majesty noted the success of the current visit to Germany, as well as recent visits to countries in Europe.

The King added that Arab and European relations are stronger than ever, and that they are working closely together to deal with challenges in the region, foremost of which is stopping the war on Gaza, supporting reconstruction, and working towards a political process, in addition to supporting Syria and Lebanon.

His Majesty said he will be meeting with European leaders in the coming weeks to discuss how to move forward in the coming months in response to these challenges.

The King also referred to his recent talks in Washington, DC, highlighting that Arabs are working on a comprehensive reconstruction plan for Gaza.

His Majesty said the breach of the ceasefire is a major setback for everyone, but in the coming weeks, if the ceasefire is restored, Arab foreign ministers will meet with their European counterparts to explore how to move forward with these plans for Gaza, before heading to the US for similar meetings.

The King expressed hope that a well-articulated plan for the rebuilding of Gaza will be supported by all.

For his part, Chancellor Scholz said Jordan and Germany have close ties of partnership and friendship, spanning more than 70 years.

He described Jordan as an anchor of stability in a region, praising His Majesty’s active and wise diplomatic leadership in achieving peace, stability and security in the Middle East.

Chancellor Scholz stressed the need to restore the ceasefire in Gaza and resume delivery of humanitarian aid, warning that the current situation must not continue as many people are starving and suffering under the continued brutal violence and lack of support and medical assistance.

Scholz explained that lasting peace to stabilise the situation in Gaza and the West Bank can only be achieved through a political solution, and that returning to serious negotiations is imperative.

He reiterated Germany’s commitment to the two-state solution as the only sustainable solution that guarantees peace and security in the Middle East, noting Jordan’s prominent role in this regard.

Chancellor Scholz praised Jordan’s great efforts in providing humanitarian aid to Gaza, and the role of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan in stabilising the situation through its custodianship of the holy sites in Jerusalem.

Scholz also spoke about the situation in Syria, where he praised Jordan’s role in hosting and providing shelter to hundreds of thousands of Syrians, which he acknowledged has placed an enormous economic burden on the Kingdom.

The chancellor said Germany will remain a reliable partner for Jordan in terms of supporting refugees, and in terms of assisting in economic development in the Kingdom and its neighbouring countries, according to the statement.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, Director of the Office of His Majesty Alaa Batayneh, and Jordan’s Ambassador to Germany Fayez Khouri attended the talks.

Jordan condemns Israeli attacks on Syria

AMMAN — Jordan on Thursday condemned the recent Israeli air strikes on several areas in Syria, describing them as a “flagrant violation of international law and an egregious breach of Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

The attacks have resulted in casualties and injuries, which could escalate regional tensions and further destabilise the situation, a Foreign Ministry statement said.

Qudah also urged the international community to exercise pressure on Israel to cease its “unlawful and provocative actions.”

- King highlights Jordan’s progress in supporting rights of persons with disabilities

AMMAN — His Majesty King Abdullah, in Berlin on Wednesday, delivered a speech at the opening of the third Global Disability Summit (GDS 2025), co-hosted by the governments of Jordan and Germany along with the International Disability Alliance.

His Majesty emphasised the need to work together and take action to ensure that people with disabilities can live their lives with dignity, happiness and hope, stressing that inclusivity is not only about ensuring accessibility for people with disabilities, but also about recognising the potential in every human being and providing an environment in which everyone can contribute.

The King highlighted Jordan’s progress in supporting the rights of persons with disabilities, as one of the first signatories to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

His Majesty also highlighted Jordan’s strong commitment to upholding disability rights through its legislation , and its pioneering centres for the care, education, rehabilitation and integration of persons with disabilities into society.

The King spoke of the need to intensify international efforts in conflict zones, where people with disabilities are more vulnerable, noting Jordan’s ‘Restoring Hope’ initiative, which has provided support to more than 400 amputees in Gaza to date, including children.

Following is the full text of His Majesty’s speech:

“In the name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful,

Chancellor Scholz,

Your Excellencies,

Dear friends,

I am delighted to join all of you today. And on behalf of Jordan, let me thank all of you for being here—for investing your time, and expertise, and tangible support, in the vital cause of disability rights.

And let me also express my deep appreciation to Germany and the International Disability Alliance—Jordan’s partners in this third Global Disability Summit. Chancellor, my special thanks to you, the people of Germany and the government of Germany, for being such gracious hosts.

My friends,

Today, every country, from the richest to the poorest, is being challenged to fulfil the rights of brothers and sisters with disabilities. And no one has a more important role in success than the disability community itself. Your work, grounded in knowledge and experience, can make a world of difference to others.

Yet the responsibility is not yours alone. Here at this Summit—and in all the days ahead—we must work together; we must commit; and we must act—to ensure that everyone can live their lives in dignity, happiness, and hope.

Inclusion is not merely about accessibility. It is about recognising the inherent potential in every human being. It is about creating environments where everyone can contribute.

My friends,

I am proud of the generations of dedicated Jordanians who continue to work for the rights of people with disabilities.

Jordan was an early signatory to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. We amended our Constitution to reflect Jordan’s strong commitment to dignity and respect. Core legislation is in place to uphold disability rights. And far-reaching national strategies are focused on advancing accessibility, independent living, and inclusive education.

Jordan is also home to one of the leading centres in the region to focus on early intervention, special education, and vocational rehabilitation for people with mild and moderate intellectual disabilities, and it is also a pioneer for young people with learning disabilities.

Most recently, to drive real change in education, we established the Royal Academy for Inclusive Education.

And achieving these goals requires work across government and society, as well as international collaboration, as in our meetings here today.

And I congratulate the more than 80 Jordanian entities from both the public and private sectors that have made concrete commitments to this Summit.

Have we done enough? We still have much more work to do, to make sure that all Jordanians with disabilities can easily travel to schools and shops and voting centres; to get good jobs; to live independently; to find acceptance, respect and love.

My friends,

Let me say, that worldwide, our responsibility and response is especially important to those living in conflict zones. And people with disabilities are exceptionally vulnerable. This is one more reason why the work for peace, peace with justice, remains vital. And it is also why humanitarian action cannot be delayed.

The situation in Gaza is a painful example. Today, Gaza has the highest number of child amputees per capita in the world, along with massive numbers of injured adults.  Medical facilities have been destroyed. And rethinking old ways is greatly needed.

Last autumn, Jordan’s Royal Medical Services deployed two customised mobile clinics, staffed by Jordanian medical teams. Working with the children, and using e-consultation to bring doctors and technicians, we have seen the creation of the world’s first children’s socket. From the back of a van!

To date, over 400 amputees, including children, have benefitted and acquired new hope. And behind every statistic is a face, a story, a life of immeasurable value. They are back with family once more. We are immensely proud of the Jordanian doctors and technicians who have responded to the need.

We call this initiative, “Restoring Hope.” And here at this Global Disability Summit, we ask you, the champions of disability rights, to join us in helping “restore hope” to Gazans, and others in jeopardy, worldwide.

Through Restoring Hope, we demonstrated that leadership, compassion, and innovation flourish in the darkest and most difficult of places.

My friends,

Where one challenge holds us back, other strengths and abilities can become our gateway forward: That’s something that people with disabilities have proven to the world, again and again.

This is our challenge at this Summit: to look beyond what is, to envision what could be, and to summon the courage to bridge that gap. To restore hope, not just through words, but through actions.

And together, we can open a new gate to the future, a future in which people with disabilities are afforded the rights, encouragement, and respect they are due.

Let us honour them by what we achieve.

Thank you. ”

The Jordanian delegation included HH Prince Mired bin Ra’ad, chief royal councillor at the Royal Hashemite Court and president of the Higher Council for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities; Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, Director of the Office of His Majesty Alaa Batayneh, as well as Jordan’s Ambassador to Germany Fayez Khouri.

AMMAN — The ancient city of Petra saw a notable rise in visitors during the first two days of Eid Al Fitr, driven in part by the resumption of low-cost flights that have boosted tourist arrivals from European countries.

According to the Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority (PDTRA), the "Rose-Red City" welcomed 7,777 visitors over the two-day period. Among them, 3,453 were foreign tourists, 314 were Arab visitors, 1,459 were foreign residents in Jordan, and 2,551 were Jordanian nationals.

PDTRA Chairman Fares Breizat described the increase as a strong indicator of tourism recovery, emphasising the crucial role of low-cost airlines in attracting European visitors, Petra’s primary tourism market.

He also reaffirmed the authority’s commitment to enhancing tourism services while preserving the site’s archaeological heritage. Efforts are also underway to diversify tourism offerings to extend visitor stays and provide an enriched experience in Petra, he added.

“Petra has been on my travel list for years, and the availability of affordable flights finally made this trip possible,” Sophia Vlatko, a tourist from Croatia, told The Jordan Times over the phone on Wednesday. “The experience was absolutely unforgettable.”

The surge in visitors has also benefited local businesses. Abdulla Khaled, who owns a souvenir shop near the Treasury, noted an increase in sales during the Eid holiday. “The season is always busy, but this year, we’ve seen even more tourists, both international and local. This Eid has been great for business.”

Tour guides have also welcomed the rise in tourism. “Compared with last year, the difference is remarkable,” said Marwa Atoun, a local guide. “It’s truly refreshing to see Petra full of life again.”
