AMMAN — His Majesty King Abdullah on Wednesday received a delegation of senior officers from the US Army National Defence University (Capstone Fellows).

His Majesty outlined Jordan's positions on regional and international developments, a Royal Court statement said.

During the meeting at Al Husseiniya Palace, they discussed regional and international efforts to combat terrorist groups and extremism through a comprehensive approach.

Jordan has called for tackling terror at the military, security and ideological levels, insisting that the threat is global, with no country being spared by terrorists.

The King has on several occasions underlined that terrorism is not restricted to Iraq and Syria, thus he urged the world community to pay attention to areas like Africa, especially Libya, where Daesh is entrenching its presence amid political chaos, along with Sinai in Egypt, Mali, Nigeria and other countries in the world.

The meeting with the Capstone delegates also covered developments of the Syrian crisis and Iraq.

The delegates, headed by Joseph Hoar, the university's senior fellow and retired general, voiced appreciation for Jordan's stances under the leadership of His Majesty to safeguard world peace and stability.

They also commended the Kingdom's efforts to combat terrorism and terrorist groups.

The meeting was attended by Royal Court Chief Fayez Tarawneh and King's Office Director Jafar Hassan.

AMMAN — Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour on Wednesday discussed with his Palestinian counterpart, Rami Hamdallah, bilateral relations and developments in the Palestinian arena, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The visiting official conveyed the greetings of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to His Majesty King Abdullah and the premier, voicing appreciation of His Majesty and the Jordanian government's efforts to support the Palestinians and their cause.

The Palestinian premier commended the improvements made on the Jordanian side of the King Hussein Bridge, including a new hall prepared for passengers and new measures to facilitate the customs processing of Palestinian goods and exports.

The US embassy announced Wednesday that it has donated to Jordan screening devices that would ease and expedite the clearance process on the bridge, the sole entrance to the Palestinian lands.

Hamdallah also outlined developments in Palestine, especially in regard to national reconciliation efforts and the hostile policies of the Israeli occupation authorities, noting that there is international consensus on the adverse effect of such policies on the stalled Palestinian-Israeli peace process.

The premier reiterated Jordan's continuous support to enhance the Palestinians' resilience and help overcome obstacles, noting that His Majesty would always defend the Palestinian cause at all regional and international platforms.

On the sidelines of the meeting, the two officials discussed the agreement to supply Jericho with electricity in terms of reconsidering the tariffs, with the amendments to be announced in the coming two weeks, Petra said.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh, Planning and International Cooperation Minister Imad Fakhoury, Energy Minister Ibrahim Saif, Social Development Minister Reem Abu Hassan and Finance Minister Omar Malhas.

AMMAN — The Saudi-based Islamic Development Bank (IDB) will support Jordan in bearing the impact of the Syrian crisis through soft loans and investment promotion, bank's President Ahmad Mohamed Ali said on Wednesday.

At the London donor conference held on February 4, the IDB pledged to increase financing to countries affected by the Syrian crisis, including Jordan, from $6 billion to $9 billion over the upcoming three years, Ali said in a meeting with the press, without specifying the amount allocated for Jordan.

He added that the IDB has pledged to provide affected countries with soft loans and is to work in coordination with the World Bank on attracting financial guarantees from donor countries to Jordan.

He cited deliberations with the government to finance Jordan’s oil and gas needs through the International Islamic Trade Finance Corporation, an arm of the IDB, at a value of $150 million.

Ali made his remarks on the sidelines of the signing ceremony for a cooperation agreement, with Planning Minister Imad Fakhoury, under which the bank undertakes to provide $200,000 to fund a project to develop underprivileged rural communities in Jordan.

The capacity-building project seeks to increase the productivity of rural societies and enhance their economic contributions to national economy. It is co-funded by the German Development Cooperation with $100,000, in addition to in-kind assistance worth $50,000 by the Jordanian Hashemite Fund for Human Development.

Fakhoury reviewed the repercussions of the Syrian crisis on Jordan, highlighting the role of soft loans in boosting the country’s socioeconomic development based on the Jordan Response Plan 2016-2018.

The minister underscored the importance of the IDB’s funds in sustaining the implementation of priority development projects for citizens and residents.

During his visit to the Kingdom, Ali is scheduled to meet with Palestinian officials to look into means of empowering Palestinian production and families.

The IDB’s total support to Jordan from 1975 to 2015 reached $975.6 million.

Northern town residents cry foul as more mortars land in Jordan side of border

By - Feb 17,2016 - Last updated at Feb 17,2016

AMMAN — Two stray mortar shells from war-torn Syria fell on Wednesday on the border city of Ramtha, with no injuries reported, according to an informed source.

"The shells fell on farming areas. The situation is largely normal and the community here has become familiar with stray bombshells from the Syrian side," Ramtha District Governor Badr Qadi told The Jordan Times on Wednesday, noting that the rest of Wednesday "went by trouble-free".

"Life is normal today. I just came back from the location of where the shells fell and everything is under control," he noted.

On Monday, a stray shell fell in Turrah area in Ramtha, injuring one of the residents.

Following the incident, Ramtha residents took to social media websites to complain over the "panic" they have been experiencing, especially lately, due to what they described as "escalating horror on the other side".

The administrator of the Ramtha Facebook page, which is followed by over 15,000 people, complained on Wednesday over the government's "silence" over what is happening in the district, located nearly 90km from Amman on the border with Syria's Daraa.

"There is a daily fall of stray shells on Ramtha that is causing panic to over 250,000 residents and no one is caring about us," the activist said.

Mohammad Darabseh noted that the government placed sirens in Amman to warn people during bad weather conditions, but "lent a deaf ear to the mortars that bombard Ramtha every day".

"What are the officials counting on? Will they remain silent until our children are killed?" Ahmad Zu'bi asked.

Residents have told The Jordan Times this week that several families living on the northern edge of Ramtha have relocated for safety.

In June last year, one person was killed and four others injured after “a stray bombshell” from Daraa hit a Ramtha house.
Residents of the border town said they have had “sleepless nights” over the past few days due to the proximity of the intense clashes between the Syrian army and the armed opposition near the border.

Meanwhile, Director of the King Abdullah I University Hospital Ibrahim Bani Hani on Tuesday announced that he had received official instructions to treat any patient injured by stray shells from the Syrian side free of charge.

In a statement issued by UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Jordan Edward Kallon, he pointed out that over the last three months, an intensification of shelling and aerial bombardment in southern Syria has led to massive displacement of civilians.

“An estimated 70,000 civilians have fled their homes, many of whom have been displaced for a second or third time in their search for safety.  Nearly 50,000 of these people remain displaced in harsh winter conditions.”

“Basic services have been suspended due to aerial shelling and over five health facilities have been struck and damaged in the past months rendering them fully or partially inoperable,” he said.

To meet the priority needs of these people who have been displaced, the United Nations and its partners have increased the delivery of humanitarian assistance through the Ramtha border. Delivery of aid to desperately vulnerable Syrians in southern Syria is only possible with the facilitation and unprecedented cooperation and support of the Jordanian authorities, in compliance with Security Council Resolutions 2165, 2191 and 2258, according to the statement.

AMMAN — The US presented on Wednesday a mobile scanning system worth over $1.3 million to Jordan to be used at the King Hussein Bridge. At a ceremony held at the bridge, US Ambassador Alice G. Wells said: “We are optimistic that the scanner will boost trade flows by as much as 30 per cent.” Public Works Minister Sami Halaseh and Trade Minister Maha Ali attended the ceremony. The donation was made possible under the US State Department’s Export Control and Related Border Security programme.
