AMMAN — The Jordan Tourism Board (JTB) has concluded its participation in FITUR 2025, held in Madrid, Spain, from January 22 to 26.

The event provided a "significant" opportunity to highlight Jordan’s tourist destination to a global audience, particularly in the Spanish market, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The Jordanian pavilion hosted representatives from 20 local tourism offices, hotels, Royal Jordanian Airlines, and the Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority (PDTRA).

JTB organised several activities alongside the exhibition, including a press conference attended by over 35 Spanish journalists and 62 meetings with key representatives from Spanish travel agencies, airlines, and media outlets.

The press conference stressed the importance of boosting tourism relations between Jordan and Spain, where speakers highlighted the Kingdom's cultural and tourism achievements, aiming to boost bilateral cooperation in the sector.

During the exhibition, a twinning agreement was signed between Jordan’s "Egeria" trail and Spain’s "Camino de Santiago" route.

The agreement, signed at the Galicia pavilion, seeks to enhance Christian and cultural tourism between the two countries, where the minister of tourism of Galicia described the collaboration as a "milestone" for both side.

JTB Director General Abdul Razzaq Arabiyat said the agreement reinforces Jordan’s position as a destination for Spanish travellers seeking religious and cultural experiences.

He noted that Jordan’s "Dawn of Christianity" initiative, launched in conjunction with the Vatican Jubilee, complements the Egeria trail, offering Spanish tourists an opportunity to explore Jordan’s Christian and historical landmarks.

Arabiyat underlined the growing importance of the Spanish market to Jordan’s tourism sector, with increasing numbers of Spanish visitors drawn to the country’s diverse offerings, including cultural heritage, natural landscapes and local cuisine.

He also underscored the role of sustainable tourism in supporting rural communities and promoting local food.

PDTRA Chief Commissioner Fares Breizat highlighted Petra’s historical "significance and unique" blend of Nabataean, Hellenistic, Islamic and Christian influences, highlighting the city’s role as a key attraction for international tourists.

The event also underscored the Kingdom's commitment to sustainable tourism development and its dedication to boosting ties with the Spanish market.

The JTB’s participation featured food-tasting experiences at the pavilion, drawing significant interest and showcasing Jordanian cuisine to international visitors.

FITUR is considered one of the world’s leading tourism exhibitions, serving as a global platform for promoting destinations and exploring industry trends.

The JTB described Jordan’s participation as a "strategic" effort to position the Kingdom as a leading destination for European markets, mainly Spain.

AMMAN — The Senate’s Palestine Committee on Monday reiterated its firm rejection of all forms of Palestinian displacement, denouncing any actions aimed at undermining their legitimate rights and aspirations.

The committee also condemned recent remarks supporting the deportation of Gaza residents, describing them as part of ongoing attempts to erase the Palestinian cause and obstruct efforts toward establishing an independent Palestinian state.

The committee also stressed the importance of aligning with His Majesty King Abdullah and HRH Crown Prince Hussein in countering Israeli far-right attempts to impose their agenda by distorting historical and geographical realities.

Warning of the grave repercussions of displacement for both Jordan and Palestine, the committee underscored Jordan's steadfast position that "Jordan is for Jordanians, and Palestine is for Palestinians."

The committee also commended His Majesty’s unwavering efforts over the past 25 years in defending Palestinian self-determination on regional and international platforms.

It also reiterated Jordan’s firm support for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state within the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Highlighting Jordan's historical role in defending Palestinian rights, the committee referenced the legacy of the Hashemite family, dating back to the leadership of Sharif Hussein and the Arab Revolt, which championed independence and unity across the Arab world.

The committee also reiterated Jordan's commitment to a just and lasting peace based on the two-state solution, ensuring the Palestinian people's legitimate rights.

It also strongly rejected any measures aimed at pressuring Palestinians into displacement and condemned Israeli far-right policies that perpetuate war and starvation in Gaza.

Also on Monday, Chairperson of the Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee Dina Bashir criticised recent statements regarding Palestinian displacement, whether temporary or long-term, highlighting that they overlook key facts, particularly the sovereignty of Jordan and Egypt.

Bashir stressed that both Jordan and Egypt have firmly opposed any form of displacement since the onset of the aggression on Gaza.

She pointed out that such statements fail to acknowledge the unwavering determination of the Palestinian people to remain on their land despite ongoing oppression and efforts to displace them.

She highlighted that since October 7, 2023, Palestinians have demonstrated their rightful claim to the land, making decisions for themselves through immense sacrifices, not seeking externally imposed solutions but standing strong in their belief in their historical right to their homeland.

Bashir also said that rejecting displacement is not just a political stance, but a sovereign Palestinian decision, representing the collective resolve of a people deeply rooted in their land.

"Palestine is not a matter for negotiation or demographic settlements but the homeland of a resilient people who will never abandon it, no matter the level of aggression," she said.

With the recent ceasefire in Gaza, industry stakeholders are hopeful for a renewed influx of travellers, which could revitalise a sector that remains a cornerstone of Jordan’s economy.

According to the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, the number of Jordanians travelling abroad for tourism purposes rose by 0.7 per cent in 2024 compared with the previous year, reaching 1.675 million travellers.

While this growth signals a steady interest in outbound travel, industry experts are calling for targeted strategies to stimulate both inbound and outbound tourism, leveraging shifting regional dynamics to drive economic growth.

Cassation Court upholds 2-year sentence for drug possession case

AMMAN — The Court of Cassation has upheld a March 2023 State Security Court (SSC) ruling sentencing a man to two years in prison after convicting him of possessing illegal narcotics in Amman in October 2022.

The court declared the defendant guilty of possessing illegal narcotics while in the Shafa Badran neighbourhood on October 13.

The SSC handed the defendant a punishment of two years in prison and ordered him to pay JD2,000 in fines.

Court documents said the Anti-Narcotics Department (AND) learnt the defendant was in possession of illegal narcotics and placed him under surveillance.

“The AND agents arrested the defendant and found a small stash of Crystal meth on him,” court documents said.

The defendant contested the SSC’s ruling through his lawyer, who argued that the court “should reduce the prison term since her client is married and has three children”.

My client possessed a small quantity of illicit drugs that was for personal use and he had no intention to sell any illicit drugs in the local market,” the lawyer also argued.

Meanwhile, the SSC prosecution office asked the higher court to uphold the sentence and the fine imposed on the defendant.

The higher court maintained that the SSC had followed the proper procedures in issuing the sentences against the defendant.

“It was clear to the court that the defendant confessed willingly to possessing the illegal drugs for personal use,” the higher court said.

Therefore, the higher court maintained that the defendant deserved the punishment he received.

The Cassation Court bench comprised judges Yassin Abdullat, Hammad Ghzawi, Qassem Dughmi, Mohammad Khashashneh and Nayef Samarat.
