The three Royal Noes: Jordan’s red lines and global consensus
Feb 17,2025 - Last updated at Feb 17,2025
In light of the increasing challenges facing the Palestinian cause, His Majesty King Abdullah stresses three non-negotiable Noes: no to displacement, no to an alternative homeland, no to liquidating the Palestinian cause. These principles form the cornerstone of the official Jordanian position and are consistent with the Arab and international consensus on the necessity of achieving the two-state solution as the only path to a just and comprehensive peace.
No to displacement; Jordan strongly rejects any attempts to force Palestinians to leave their lands, whether from the Gaza Strip or the West Bank. Displacing the population represents a flagrant violation of international law and complicates the crisis rather than resolving it. No to an alternative homeland; King Abdullah stresses that Jordan will not be an alternative to Palestine, and that the only solution is to establish an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, and not to liquidate the cause by resettling Palestinians outside their homeland.
No to liquidation; Israeli escalation and attempts to impose unilateral solutions threaten to liquidate the Palestinian cause, but the Jordanian and international position is clear: "A just solution must be found that guarantees the rights of the Palestinians." These principles are in line with the position of the international community, which continues to support the two-state solution as a framework for achieving peace and stability in the region.
Considering the current political developments, King AbdullahI made an important visit to Washington to meet with US President Donald Trump, where the discussions focused on the Palestinian issue, especially with regard to proposals to displace Palestinians from the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. During the meeting, King Abdullah stressed Jordan's categorical rejection of any plans aimed at displacing Palestinians, stressing that this position represents Arab and Islamic consensus.
This visit comes at a sensitive time, as President Trump has proposed a controversial plan to evacuate the Gaza Strip of its Palestinian residents and resettle them in neighbouring countries such as Jordan and Egypt. This plan was widely rejected by Arab countries, as King Abdullah stressed that Jordan, which already hosts a large percentage of refugees of several nationalities, cannot receive more refugees.
He pointed out that the reconstruction of Gaza must be carried out without displacing its population, with a focus on improving the humanitarian situation in the Strip. In this context, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, the Arab Republic of Egypt and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia are leading intensive Arab efforts to develop an alternative plan aimed at rebuilding Gaza without harming its population.
This plan, which is being coordinated with Jordan, Egypt and other Arab countries, includes rebuilding the Strip’s infrastructure and enhancing security and good governance, while excluding any role for Hamas in future administration. This comes within the framework of seeking to achieve the two-state solution as a basic path to achieving peace and stability in the region.
Important Arab meetings are scheduled to be held to discuss these developments, as Riyadh will host a summit that includes Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the UAE, Qatar and Jordan in the coming days to discuss the response to US President Donald Trump's plan regarding the Gaza Strip, to discuss the proposed plan and prepare a unified position before the Arab summit scheduled to be held in Cairo on February 27.
These meetings aim to enhance Arab coordination and unify efforts to confront the challenges facing the Palestinian cause, especially in light of international pressures and attempts to impose solutions that conflict with the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.
In this context, King Abdullah stressed that "any attempt to impose a new reality on the ground or displace Palestinians is completely rejected," stressing that Jordan will not be a party to any plan aimed at liquidating the Palestinian cause.
King Abdullah added that the only acceptable solution is the two-state solution, which guarantees the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital. He also called on the international community to assume its responsibilities and stop Israeli violations, noting that the continuation of the injustice inflicted on the Palestinians will lead to further escalation and instability in the region.
The Arab position remains firm in rejecting any attempts to displace Palestinians, while stressing the need to find peaceful solutions that guarantee the rights of the Palestinian people to establish their independent state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
These diplomatic moves reflect the commitment of Arab countries to support the Palestinian cause and confront any attempts aimed at liquidating the rights of the Palestinian people or changing the demographic composition of the region.
King Abdullah's visit to Washington and his meeting with President Trump stand out as part of ongoing Jordanian and Arab efforts to protect the rights of Palestinians and prevent their displacement, with a focus on rebuilding Gaza and improving the humanitarian situation there without harming its residents.
These moves reflect the commitment of Arab countries to joint work and continuous coordination to confront the challenges facing the Palestinian cause, and to emphasize that a just and comprehensive solution lies in achieving peace based on the two-state solution and guaranteeing the rights of the Palestinian people to self-determination.
