Today, Jordan hosts an international conference on emergency humanitarian response in the Gaza Strip, jointly organised by the Kingdom, Egypt and the United Nations. This conference comes at the invitation of His Majesty King Abdullah, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi and United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and is held at the King Hussein Bin Talal Convention Centre in the Dead Sea region. The conference aims to strengthen the international community’s response to the humanitarian disaster in the Gaza Strip and identify mechanisms and effective steps to support the residents of the Gaza Strip.
This conference represents a vital step in international efforts to confront the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza, as more than 2.3 million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip face severe suffering as a result of the ongoing war, and the humanitarian situation there is worsening with the spread of famine and lack of access to clean water, shelter and medicines, which increases the importance of strengthening international efforts to provide immediate and effective assistance.
To address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and limit the spread of famine, disease and epidemics, urgent and coordinated international intervention is required. Immediate food aid must meet the basic needs of the population, with a focus on the most vulnerable groups, such as children and women. Improving access to clean water is vital to preventing waterborne diseases, so water purification plants and effective distribution networks must be provided.
Focusing on healthcare, which is an essential element of the humanitarian response, is also of paramount importance to help provide hospitals and health centres with the necessary medicines and medical supplies and launch large-scale vaccination campaigns to combat the spread of infectious diseases. In addition, local medical personnel must be trained and supported to ensure the sustainability of these efforts.
Strengthening health infrastructure and building local capacities contribute to improving the health situation in a sustainable manner. Through these measures, the international community can alleviate the immediate suffering of the people of Gaza and help improve their living conditions significantly and sustainably.
The conference also aims to develop effective mechanisms for humanitarian response and identify the required logistical and operational needs. The conference will address identifying ways to enhance the international community’s response, including coordinating humanitarian efforts between countries and relevant organisations. The conference also seeks to provide practical solutions that support the steadfastness of the people of Gaza in the face of the daily challenges they face, especially regarding food and medical aid and shelter.
This initiative comes within efforts to establish a state of international partnership to discuss the details of humanitarian and relief assistance to women and children in Gaza, who are the groups most affected by the current crisis. This step reflects the desire of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, the Arab Republic of Egypt and the United Nations to unify international efforts to achieve the greatest effectiveness in aiding and support.
Jordan’s role in leading this international effort is highlighted due to its high credibility and open relations with all concerned parties. This enhances Jordan’s ability to lead this initiative thanks to its extensive experience in the humanitarian field and its strong relations with countries and international organisations. This conference also represents an opportunity for Jordan to confirm its pivotal role in the region as a country supporting peace and stability and an initiative to provide humanitarian solutions.
The conference is an opportunity to create the foundations for effective collective action to achieve the desired goals, including stopping aggression and providing aid in sizes and numbers that meet the basic needs of the people of Gaza. The conference also seeks to establish a reconstruction phase in Gaza, which requires continued efforts and broad international coordination. The organisation of this international conference reflects the commitment of Jordan, Egypt and the United Nations to provide humanitarian support to the Gaza Strip and address the humanitarian crisis there. The international community looks forward to tangible results from this conference that will contribute to alleviating the suffering of the people of Gaza and providing them with the necessary support, which enhances hope for improving the humanitarian conditions in the Gaza Strip.
Imposing a permanent ceasefire and strengthening peace and security in the region requires intense diplomatic efforts from the international community, including mediation between conflicting parties and providing security guarantees, to achieve lasting peace that will enable the implementation of reconstruction and development programs, which enhances stability and improves conditions and the living standards for the people of Gaza.
