WFP welcomes $1.5m donation from China

AMMAN — The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has welcomed a $1.5 million donation from the People’s Republic of China that will allow the WFP to provide vital food assistance to vulnerable Syrian refugees living in Zaatari and Azraq camps in Jordan, a statement from the UN agency said on Wednesday.

The contribution will also be used to provide healthy school meals to children in Zaatari camp.

“We are very grateful for this contribution which consolidates China’s commitment to help those in dire need of support,” Mageed Yahia, WFP Jordan representative and country director, was quoted in the statement as saying.

Part of the contribution will be used to assist some 4,000 Syrian refugees, many who have decided to move into the camps from urban areas due to their inability to afford basic needs such as food, shelter and healthcare, the statement said.

WFP will provide new camp arrivals with daily meals until their registration in the WFP iris scan food assistance programme is complete.
