Watchdog criticises ruling 'limiting MPs’ questions' in oversight sessions

AMMAN – The Civil Coalition for Monitoring Parliamentary Elections (Rased) on Saturday criticised a ruling issued by the Law Interpretation Bureau that bans MPs from requesting names and specific documents while directing questions to the government during a Lower House monitoring session.

Rased underlined that this ruling “limits the duties of Parliament in monitoring the government’s work”, noting that such a decision “weakens” the monitoring role of MPs granted by the Constitution.

The coalition also added that the ruling violates deputies’ right to access information, which also breaches the Constitution.

Rased called on the Lower House to request an interpretation of the ruling by the Constitutional Court.
